Chapter 5 - Venom in Silk

Before I could digest his words, the glass of my living room window shattered inward with a deafening crack. Dante moved with terrifying speed, tackling me to the floor and shielding my body with his own as high-caliber bullets ripped through the drywall above our heads. Sirens didn't blare; this was a clean, silent execution attempt in the middle of nowhere.

"Stay down!" Dante roared, drawing a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster. He returned fire through the broken frame with ruthless precision, forcing the attackers back into the tree line. Through the smoke and dust, a voice mocked us over a megaphoned loudspeaker from the driveway—a light, feminine laugh that sent chills down my spine.

"Oh, Dante! You always were so dramatic!" Sofia’s voice echoed across the lawn. "Did you really think I wouldn't follow your heart straight to her little hideaway? And how sweet—a package deal! Two birds, one stone, and the entire Moretti bloodline wiped out in a single afternoon!"
