Chapter 19 - The Queen's Gambit

"Put the gun down, Sofia," Dante said, stepping slowly into the room, raising both hands while keeping his body positioned between Sofia's barrel and the crib. "This is between you and me. Lena had nothing to do with—"

"Stop lying to him, Sofia!" I interrupted, stepping out from behind Dante, dropping my weapons onto the floor with a loud metallic clatter. Dante snapped his head toward me in utter horror, but I kept my eyes fixed on Sofia. "She's right, Dante. Stop protecting me. I gave the order to execute your Uncle Carlo. I leaked the security codes that destroyed your Chicago operations. I made you believe you were weak so you would give up the throne and bring me here."

Sofia laughed triumphantly, her hand trembling on the trigger. "You hear that, Dante? Your precious, fragile wife made a fool out of you! She turned you into a domestic dog while she ruled the world!"

"Yes, I did," I said, taking one deliberate step toward Sofia, drawing her full attention away from the babies. "And do you know why I did it, Sofia? Because Dante was too honorable to kill his own family. He would have let you and Carlo bleed him dry out of a misguided sense of loyalty. I didn't have that weakness. I destroyed his empire so I could rebuild it into something you could never touch."
