Chapter 8 - Dawn at Crowe ManorThe first golden rays of dawn broke over the rugged coastline of Westport, casting a warm, peaceful light across the sprawling lawns of Crowe Manor. The sirens had faded, the black tactical vans had departed, and the heavy iron gates stood open once more—not to enemies, but to a new beginning.

In the private office, the charred remnants of past trauma had been swept away.

Claire sat on the black leather sofa, holding a steaming cup of coffee while Lily slept peacefully beside her, wrapped once again in the soft gray blanket.

The door opened softly, and Nathaniel walked in. He had changed out of his tactical vest into a clean charcoal suit, though a faint scratch on his cheek was the only remaining physical mark of the night's battle.

He walked over and set a small, neatly wrapped package on the coffee table beside Claire.

"What's this?" Claire asked, looking up at him.

"Your husband's personal effects," Nathaniel said softly, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite her. "The federal archive department recovered them from Daniel’s old secure locker downtown. Among them was something I think belongs to Lily."

Claire carefully untied the ribbon. Inside was a small, polished silver music box. She turned the key on the bottom and opened the lid.

A gentle, familiar lullaby filled the quiet room—the exact melody Daniel used to hum to Lily every night before he went away.

Tears welled in Claire’s eyes, spilling quietly down her cheeks. But this time, they weren't tears of fear or sorrow. They were tears of closure.

"He never stopped thinking of us," Claire whispered, her voice breaking. "Even at the very end."

"No, he didn't," Nathaniel agreed, his dark eyes softening as he looked at her. "He kept you safe, Claire. And in doing so, he saved me, too."

Claire looked up, meeting his gaze. The heavy air of mystery and danger that had hung between them since she first arrived at the manor was gone, replaced by a quiet, unbreakable understanding.

"What happens now, Nathaniel?" she asked softly.

"That's entirely up to you," Nathaniel replied, leaning forward slightly. "The estate is reorganizing. The foundation is clean. You can leave, start fresh anywhere in the world... or you can stay."

Lily stirred sleepily on the sofa, stretching her tiny arms and rubbing her green eyes. She looked up, saw Nathaniel standing by the desk, and gave him a bright, sleepy smile.

"Hi, Mr. Grumpy," Lily mumbled adorably.

Nathaniel let out a genuine, low chuckle—a sound that Claire realized was the warmest, most human thing she had ever heard from him.

Nathaniel walked over to the sofa, knelt down beside the little girl, and gently brushed a stray curl of hair from her forehead.

"Hello, little one," Nathaniel smiled softly. "I think... I think I'm not so grumpy anymore."
