Chapter 5 - The Vanguard ThreatNathaniel’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice.

"The Vanguard Syndicate," Nathaniel repeated slowly. "Victor Vance’s crew. They must have caught wind that Grant was flipping and the titanium capsule was recovered."

"They've surrounded the main manor," Marcus reported, pulling out his tablet to show the security camera feed. On the screen, at least two dozen heavily armed mercenaries in black tactical gear were disembarking from armored vehicles, setting up perimeter positions around the mansion's massive glass atrium. "They’ve cut our landlines and jammed our satellite uplink. We’re completely isolated."

Claire felt a cold shriek of terror grip her chest. She looked over at the sofa where Lily was still sleeping soundly.

"My daughter," Claire gasped, standing up abruptly. "We need to get out of here—"

"No, Claire," Nathaniel intercepted her, placing a firm, reassuring hand on her shoulder. "If you go out those doors right now, you walk right into their crossfire. This is my house, and they are here for me—and for the evidence in that book."

Nathaniel walked back to the desk, picked up the titanium capsule containing the micro-SD card, and slipped it securely into an inner pocket of his tailored jacket. He then reached beneath the mahogany desk and pulled out a heavy tactical vest loaded with spare magazines, slipping it over his shirt.

"Marcus," Nathaniel commanded sharply. "Activate the estate's subterranean bunker lockdown protocol. Move the staff and Lily down through the panic room corridor behind the grand staircase."

"Boss, what about you?" Marcus asked, racking the slide of his submachine gun.

"I'm going to greet our uninvited guests," Nathaniel said, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile playing on his lips. "Let's see how much Victor Vance really wants that book."

Claire grabbed Nathaniel’s arm before he could turn away.

"Don't be reckless," she pleaded, her eyes searching his face. "You survived the betrayal, you cleared Emily's name... don't throw your life away now."

Nathaniel paused, looking down at her hand on his arm. For a fraction of a second, the cold, feared mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man who looked like he had finally found something worth fighting for—something beyond power, beyond vengeance.

"I spent three years living in the dark, Claire," Nathaniel said softly, covering her hand with his own. "For the first time tonight, I see a way out. I'm not planning on dying today."

He turned and strode out of the office, his heavy boots echoing down the grand hallway.
