Chapter 4 - Shadows at the GatesThirty minutes later, the atmosphere inside Crowe Manor had shifted from tense paranoia to a strange, quiet calm.

The federal authorities had arrived in unmarked black SUVs through the back gates, guided by Marcus to secure the evidence and take Grant into custody. The corrupt network within the syndicate was collapsing like a house of cards, dismantled by the very evidence Daniel Whitmore had hidden inside a child's storybook.
Claire sat in one of the plush armchairs by the fireplace in Nathaniel’s private office. Lily had finally fallen asleep, curled up peacefully on the leather sofa, her thumb tucked safely in her mouth.
Nathaniel poured two crystal glasses of amber whiskey, handing one to Claire before taking a seat opposite her.
"You don't have to stay here anymore, Claire," Nathaniel said quietly, swirling the liquid in his glass. "If the media catches wind of the arrests tomorrow, this place will become a circus. I can arrange for a secure relocation, a new identity, and enough financial backing to ensure that you and Lily never have to worry about money again. For the rest of your lives."
Claire looked down at her glass, watching the firelight dance across the surface of the whiskey.
"And you?" she asked softly. "What happens to you, Mr. Crowe?"
Nathaniel let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "I clean house. I rebuild the syndicate into what it was always supposed to be—protection, not corruption. And I carry the guilt of having failed my sister, and your husband."
"You didn't know," Claire said, looking up to meet his intense gaze. "None of us did."
Before Nathaniel could reply, a sharp, frantic knock sounded on the private office door.
Marcus burst in without waiting for permission, his face pale, his hand resting firmly on his firearm.
"Boss," Marcus panted. "We have a massive problem at the front gates."

Nathaniel stood up instantly, his aura of authority returning in a flash. "What kind of problem? The feds just cleared the perimeter."
"It's not the feds," Marcus said, his voice laced with genuine panic. "It's the Vanguard Syndicate. Three armored transports just breached the outer security checkpoint. They aren't here for Grant... they're here for the book."
