Chapter 1 - THE PHANTOM IN THE WEST WINGThe sound of Luca Costello’s footsteps was a miracle that nobody was supposed to hear yet.

For twelve years, the East Wing of the Reyes estate had been a monument to static silence, dominated only by the faint whir of electric wheelchair motors and the muffled, cautious footfalls of guards who treated the master like a ticking bomb. But at 3:15 AM on a freezing December night, the hardwood floor beneath the Persian rug gave a sharp, dry groan.

Luca gripped the mahogany bedpost with knuckles as white as bone. His legs felt like two iron pillars filled with liquid fire—pins and needles so intense they bordered on agony, signaling that the deadened nerves were violently reconnecting.

Closer, he told himself. Keep breathing.

His mind flashed back to the tox report and the realization that his paralysis was a manufactured cage. For twelve years, someone had kept him locked in that chair while they carved up his shipping routes, usurped his cartel alliances, and turned his empire into a corporate laundering machine. And the man sitting at the head of the boardroom table every Monday morning, presiding over Luca's supposed decline, was none other than Marcus Vance—his own adopted brother and chief legal counsel.

A sudden, sharp knock at the door broke his concentration.

Luca’s breath hitched. He didn't answer.

The heavy oak door creaked open an inch. A sliver of amber hallway light cut across the darkness. A masked silhouette slipped inside with the fluid, soundless grace of a predator who owned the night.

It wasn't a guard. Guards knocked loudly or announced themselves over the intercom out of sheer terror. This intruder moved with absolute familiarity, sliding toward the oversized leather armchair by the window where Luca’s empty wheelchair sat like an abandoned iron throne.

Luca stood frozen in the deep shadows near the wardrobe, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

The intruder stepped into the moonlight filtering through the frost-laced window. It was Victor, Marcus Vance’s personal head of security. In his right hand, he held a sleek, silenced Walther PPK.

Victor approached the wheelchair, looked down at the empty seat, and froze.

His head snapped up, eyes darting frantically into the darkness. "Boss?" Victor whispered, his voice dripping with sudden, venomous panic. "Marcus said the dosage was still holding. Where the hell are you?"

Luca smiled in the dark, the pain in his legs fading into a cold, lethal numbness. He let go of the bedpost.

It was time to take his house back.
