Chapter 3 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSHThe mahogany boardroom on the 42nd floor of Costello Global Tower in downtown Chicago was designed to intimidate. Its floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of a steel-gray Lake Michigan, and its massive conference table could seat thirty of the most ruthless power-brokers in the Midwest.

Today, only twelve men sat around it. And every single one of them was sweating.
Marcus Vance sat at the head of the table, flanked by four armed corporate enforcers whose jackets bulged suspiciously at the ribs. On the projection screen behind him, a legal document titled Emergency Succession and Asset Re-allocation Act glowed in bright blue lettering.
"Gentlemen," Marcus began, clearing his throat and trying to inject a note of solemn authority into his trembling voice. "As you all know, Luca Costello’s physical and mental decline has reached an irreversible stage. For twelve years, we have carried the weight of his legacy. Today, to protect our assets from federal scrutiny and market volatility, we must vote to transfer sole operational control to—"
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The heavy double doors at the far end of the boardroom didn't just open—they swung inward with a resounding, violent crash.
Silence slammed over the room like a physical blow.
Every head snapped toward the entrance.
Luca Costello walked into the room.
He didn't need a cane. He didn't need an arm to lean on. His stride was steady, deliberate, and utterly devastating to look at. Behind him walked Elena Harper, carrying a thick leather briefcase, followed by two federal agents in dark suits and three heavily armed private security contractors loyal directly to Luca's personal offshore accounts.
Marcus stood up so fast his executive chair flipped over backward, crashing loudly against the walnut wainscoting.
"That's impossible!" Marcus shrieked, his voice cracking with rising hysteria. "The medical reports! The neuro-scans! You're paralyzed!"
"The medical reports were falsified by a corrupt physician on your payroll, Marcus," Luca said softly, his voice cutting through the cavernous room as he walked straight toward the head of the table. "Just like the stock transfers you authorized while I was trapped inside my own skull."
Marcus’s face turned a dangerous shade of purple. He slammed his palms onto the mahogany table. "Guards! Remove him! He’s trespassing! He’s mentally unfit!"
None of the four enforcers moved. They were staring at Luca’s eyes—the eyes of the man who had built this criminal empire with his bare hands before Marcus was even out of law school. They knew better than to test a loaded gun.

Luca stopped three feet from Marcus, looking down at his adopted brother with absolute, chilling detachment.
"You forgot one rule of the Costello family, Marcus," Luca whispered, leaning in close. "Never bury a wolf until you've cut off his head. You only buried me to the waist."
