Chapter 5 - THE SHATTERED MIRRORBack in the main study of the Reyes estate, the fire crackled warmly against the chill of the Chicago evening.

Elena Harper stood by the tall arched window, looking out toward the privet hedge where the gap remained untouched, exactly as Luca had ordered. A warm mug of tea sat untouched between her hands.

The door opened softly, and Luca walked in. His stride was even now, the residual pain fading into a dull, manageable thrum.

"He's gone," Luca said, stopping a few feet behind her. "The FBI took him downtown. He won't be seeing daylight anytime soon."

Elena didn't turn around immediately. She stared at her reflection in the dark glass of the window, watching the faint outline of Luca standing behind her. Twelve years of survival, fear, and quiet endurance were etched into the lines around her eyes.

"I spent twelve years hiding from your shadow, Luca," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Every time I saw a black town car on the South Side, my stomach dropped. I thought your men were coming to wipe out anyone who knew you existed before the wheelchair."

Luca stepped closer, his heart tightening in his chest. "You didn't have to hide, Elena. If I had known..."

"I know," she interrupted softly, finally turning to face him. "You didn't know. Just like you didn't know about Maya."

She looked up at him, her gaze piercing right through his defenses, seeing the man behind the empire—the man who had watched a little girl dance in the backyard and felt something come back to life inside his chest.

"What happens to us now, Luca?" she asked, her voice steadying. "You’re back on your feet. You own half the city again. You’re a billionaire kingpin who just reclaimed his throne. I’m just a maid who cleans your baseboards."

Luca reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping her cheek. For the first time in twelve years, there was no barrier between them—no medical machinery, no corporate lawyers, no lies.

"You were never a maid, Elena," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "You were the only real thing in my life before the darkness started. And you and Maya are the only reason I walked out of it."

Before Elena could answer, a loud, energetic crash echoed from the hallway outside.

The heavy oak door flew open, and Maya burst into the study, dragging Tommy Reyes behind her by the sleeve of his oversized jacket.

"Mom! Mr. Costello!" Maya announced proudly, holding up a dusty, dented baseball bat she had apparently scavenged from the old equipment shed. "We fixed the home plate! Tommy says if you’re really back on your feet, you have to pitch to us!"

Luca looked down at the little girl—his daughter—and then across at Elena, whose lips curved into a fragile, genuine smile.

The empire was back in his hands. But for the first time in his life, Luca Costello realized he didn't care about the throne at all.

He cared about the game in the backyard.
