Chapter 9 - THE HEARTH AND THE CROWNThe snow had stopped by Sunday afternoon, leaving the Reyes estate blanketed in a pristine, glittering white mantle that muffled the noises of the city.

Inside the main study, the roaring fireplace cast a warm, flickering golden glow across the antique bookshelves and the polished mahogany desk.

Elena Harper sat on the plush leather sofa, watching Maya and Tommy carefully construct an elaborate puzzle on the Persian rug while arguing fiercely over where a cardboard piece of a castle tower belonged.

The heavy oak door opened, and Luca walked in carrying a steaming tray of hot chocolate with marshmallows. He set it down gently on the low table before taking a seat in the armchair opposite Elena.

"The federal indictments against Petrov and the remaining syndicate leaders were finalized this morning," Luca said softly, his eyes resting on Elena with an expression of profound, quiet peace. "Costello Global is fully secured. The board restructured unanimously at sunrise. Nobody will ever threaten this estate again."

Elena looked up from her cup, her eyes shining with unshed tears. For twelve years, her life had been defined by fear, uncertainty, and solitary struggle. Now, looking at the man who had reclaimed his life—and the family they never knew they shared—the weight finally lifted completely off her shoulders.

"You did it," she whispered. "You took it all back."

"No," Luca corrected gently, reaching across the table to take her hand in his. "I just stopped letting someone else write my story. The best part of it only started when a little girl came through the hedge on a Tuesday afternoon."

At the mention of her name, Maya looked up from the puzzle, flashing a bright, gap-toothed grin. "Hey! Are you guys talking about me?"

"We are," Luca laughed, a deep, resonant sound that filled the room with warmth. "We were discussing how you need to finish your math homework before dinner if you want to practice your dance routine on the porch tomorrow."

Maya groaned dramatically, collapsing backward onto the rug with a theatrical sigh, while Tommy laughed and tossed a puzzle piece at her head.

Elena shook her head, smiling as she squeezed Luca’s hand back.

The empire was safe. The enemies were gone. And for the first time in over a decade, Luca Costello wasn't ruling an empire from a distance—he was right where he belonged, sitting by the fire with the people who had brought him back to life.
