Chapter 7 - THE BREAK-IN AT DAWNThe cold winter wind howled across the Reyes estate at 4:00 AM, driving frozen sleet against the reinforced glass of the conservatory.

Inside, the house was dead silent—except for the faint, rhythmic squeak of floorboards in the second-floor hallway.
Elena Harper woke instantly.
Years of living on the edge of survival had trained her to recognize the subtle acoustic shifts of a domestic space. This wasn't the heavy, purposeful tread of Luca’s private guards. This was light, hurried, and deliberate—the sound of someone trying very hard not to be heard.
She slid out from under the heavy wool blankets of her guest suite, slipping her feet into her slippers without making a sound. She eased the bedroom door open an inch and peered out into the dim hallway.
A dark figure was crouched outside Maya’s bedroom door.
The intruder was small, agile, and wearing tactical gear that absorbed the meager ambient light. In his gloved right hand, he held a sleek, aerosolized canister—chloroform.
Panic seized Elena’s throat, cutting off her breath. She didn't think; she reacted.
She grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the mahogany console table beside her door and charged down the hallway with a feral cry. "Get away from her!"
The intruder whipped around, startled by the sudden ambush. He raised an arm to block the blow, but Elena swung with the desperate fury of a mother defending her child. The heavy brass struck the man's shoulder with a sickening thud, sending him crashing backward against the wainscoting.
The bedroom door flew open. Maya stood on the threshold rubbing her eyes, blinking sleepily at the chaos in the corridor. "Mom? What’s going on?"
"Stay back, Maya! Get back inside!" Elena screamed, raising the candlestick for a second strike.
Before the intruder could recover his footing, a heavy, iron-grip hand clamped down onto the back of his tactical vest with bone-crushing force.
Luca Costello hoisted the grown man off the floor as if he weighed nothing at all, slamming him face-first against the opposite wall with enough velocity to crack the plaster.
"Who sent you?" Luca growled, his face inches from the terrified intruder's mask, his voice vibrating with suppressed murderous rage.
The man gasped for air, his eyes wide with absolute terror as he stared up into Luca’s blazing eyes. "I... I don't know! It was a blind contract through the dark web! They just said... they said eliminate the maid and the kid to rattle the boss!"
May you like
Luca’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He didn't hit him again. Instead, he dropped the man like a discarded rag onto the carpet and pinned him down with the heel of his heavy boot.
"Tell whoever hired you that the boss is awake," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "And tell them I'm coming to collect."
