Chapter 8 - THE TRAP CLOSES AT DOCK FOURBy noon on Thursday, Dock Sector Four was eerily quiet.

The massive gantry cranes hung motionless against the gray winter sky, and the towering stacks of shipping containers cast long, gloomy shadows across the frozen asphalt. This was supposed to be the staging ground where the Bratva and the Syndicate syndicate were meeting to divide up Costello Global’s lucrative overseas shipping routes.
Instead, it was a ghost town.
Viktor Petrov, the ruthless lieutenant who had taken over the Bratva’s Chicago operations, stepped out of a black armored SUV, his hand resting casually inside his heavy wool coat. He looked around the empty yard with a growing sense of unease.
"Where are they?" Petrov muttered to his chief enforcer, a hulking brute named Yuri. "The cargo manifests said the containers were unlocked and ready for transfer."
"Something's wrong, boss," Yuri whispered, his hand drifting toward his submachine gun. "The security cameras on the perimeter towers are looping footage. We're blind."
"Too late for blindness, gentlemen," a calm, resonant voice echoed across the empty concrete lot.
Petrov spun around.
Standing atop the metal catwalk of Container Stack B, bathed in the harsh winter glare, was Luca Costello. He wasn't alone. Six heavily armed private security operatives stood behind him, their assault rifles leveled dead-center at the Bratva convoy.
And flanking Luca on his right, leaning casually against the railing, was Special Agent Sarah Vance, holding a federal arrest warrant in her hand.
"Luca Costello," Petrov snarled, forcing a cold, arrogant smile to his face as he stepped out into the open. "I heard you were rotting in a wheelchair, drinking soup through a straw. Looks like the rumors were exaggerated."
"Not exaggerated enough, Viktor," Luca said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the windy harbor. "You tried to move on my docks. You tried to touch my family. And you made the fatal mistake of assuming a man who survived twelve years in the dark doesn't know how to turn off the lights."
Petrov’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage. He drew his pistol, screaming, "Kill him! Burn the whole damn yard down!"
He never got the chance to pull the trigger.
Crack.
A single, precise shot from a sniper rifle stationed on a distant gantry crane blew Petrov’s pistol clean out of his hand, sending the metal spinning away across the frozen asphalt.
Before the Bratva guards could react, a dozen federal tactical vehicles swarmed out from behind the towering shipping containers, sealing off every exit with blinding headlights and screaming sirens.
Agent Vance raised a megaphone. "Bratva syndicate! Drop your weapons! You are completely surrounded by federal agents and Costello security forces. Resistance is fatal!"
Yuri looked at Petrov, then at the wall of guns pointed directly at them. Slowly, deliberately, he dropped his submachine gun onto the concrete and raised his hands.

Petrov stood frozen, staring up at Luca on the catwalk. Luca didn't shout. He didn't gloat. He simply looked down at the men who had tried to scavenge his empire with the cold, absolute finality of a predator securing his territory.
The war for Chicago was over before it had even truly begun.
