Chapter 1 - THE MARK OF THE UNDERWORLD

The rain didn't stop, but the world around Elena seemed to freeze.

The man who had pulled her from the jaws of the river stood up, the water cascading off his tailored black overcoat in dark ribbons. His men—built like brick walls and dressed in identical, sharp suits—formed a impenetrable perimeter around them. They didn't look at the river. They didn't look at the city skyline. They looked only at him, waiting for a executioner’s nod or a savior's command.

"Sir," one of the men stepped forward, his voice a tense whisper. "The police are tracing the bridge cameras. We need to move. Now."

The stranger ignored his subordinate. His pale gray eyes remained locked on Elena, tracing the fierce grip she still maintained on her wet backpack, and then shifting down to the prominent curve of her seven-month-pregnant stomach.

"What is your name?" he asked. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, low frequency that commanded absolute obedience.

"Elena," she whispered, her teeth clicking together. "Elena Ward."

"Elena," he repeated, testing the weight of it. "A nurse who drowns for a bag of cheap antibiotics. Either you are the bravest woman in this corrupt city, or the most foolish."

"They aren't cheap to the people who are dying," Elena fired back, a sudden spike of adrenaline conquering her fear. She tried to stand, but her knees buckled under the weight of her exhaustion and her pregnancy.

Before she could hit the concrete again, a massive, scarred hand caught her elbow. The stranger lifted her effortlessly, transferring her into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all.

"Let me go!" she gasped, her hands instinctively pressing against his chest. It felt like striking solid marble. Beneath the wet fabric of his shirt, she could feel the faint, jagged ridges of old scar tissue.

"If I let you go, Elena, you will freeze, or the people who threw you off that bridge will find you and finish the job," he said calmly, walking toward the lead black sedan.

Elena’s heart stopped. The people who threw her off.

It hadn't been an accident. She had convinced herself she slipped on the wet boards of the ferry bridge, but as the memory flashed backward through the terror, she remembered the sudden, violent shove against her shoulder blades. She remembered the shadow behind her just before the plunge.

"Who... who are you?" she breathed, staring up at his sharp, aristocratic jawline.

The man opening the car door paused, looking at Elena with a mixture of pity and shock. "You really don't know, miss? That's Nikolai Borzov. The Bratva owns this harbor. And he owns the Bratva."

Nikolai Borzov. The "Ghost of the Docks." The man the tabloids accused of rewriting the city's political landscape with blood, and whom the police department refused to investigate out of sheer terror.

Nikolai slid into the leather backseat, keeping Elena firmly against his side, wrapped in the heavy wool blanket. The car roared to life, tearing away from the riverbank into the misty dark.

"You're a target, Nurse Ward," Nikolai said, staring out the tinted window as the city lights blurred past. "And unfortunately for whoever tried to kill you tonight... I don't like people making a mess in my river."
