Chapter 3 - THE BETRAYAL IN THE DARK

The warehouse shuddered as an explosion echoed from the lower levels. The lights flickered, casting long, frantic shadows across the room.

"Move!" Nikolai barked, his calm demeanor instantly transforming into that of a battlefield general. He drew a sleek, black firearm from beneath his coat with terrifying speed.

He grabbed Elena, shielding her body with his own as they hurried down a narrow, hidden concrete staircase behind the fireplace. The sounds of gunfire and shattering glass echoed from above.

"They're going to kill us," Elena whimpered, her hands trembling violently against her pregnant stomach. "They're going to kill my baby."

Nikolai stopped on the stairs. He turned, placing both of his massive hands on her shoulders. He forced her to look into his piercing gray eyes.

"Listen to me, Elena," he said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. "I have built an empire on the bodies of men who thought they could take what is mine. Right now, you and that child are under my protection. No bullet will touch you while I still draw breath. Do you understand me?"

The absolute certainty in his voice acted like an anchor for her panicked mind. She nodded, swallowing her tears. "Yes."

They reached the basement level, which opened up into an old, disused subway tunnel. A specialized armored SUV was waiting, its engine idling silently in the dark.

But as they approached the vehicle, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the tunnel, holding a rifle.

It was Dimitri—Nikolai’s right-hand man, the very same enforcer who had opened the car door for them at the riverbank.

"I'm sorry, Boss," Dimitri said, his hands shaking slightly as he aimed the weapon at Nikolai’s chest. "Vance offered me more money than the docks make in a decade. He wants the girl dead, and he wants you out of the city."

Elena clutched Nikolai’s coat, terror paralyzing her.

Nikolai didn't even flinch. He didn't look angry; he looked disappointed. "I raised you from the gutters, Dimitri. I taught you that loyalty is paid in gold, but betrayal is paid in lead."

"You're outnumbered, Nikolai! There are twenty men upstairs!" Dimitri yelled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Bang.

The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the enclosed tunnel. Elena shrieked, closing her eyes. But she didn't feel Nikolai fall.

When she opened her eyes, Dimitri was on his knees, a neat red hole in the center of his forehead. Behind him stood the female doctor from earlier, holding a smoking pistol with a perfectly steady hand.

"You aren't the only one who owes Mr. Borzov their life, Dimitri," the doctor said coldly, stepping over the body.

Nikolai didn't waste a second. He threw Elena into the passenger seat of the armored SUV, leaped into the driver's seat, and slammed on the gas, roaring deeper into the dark, forgotten veins of the city.
