Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF ALLIANCE

By dawn, the SUV pulled into a secluded villa hidden deep in the forested hills overlooking the city. It was a fortress disguised as a paradise.
Elena was completely exhausted, her body aching from the physical and emotional trauma of the past twelve hours. Nikolai left her in the care of his loyal staff, disappearing into a private study to wage an invisible war against Councilman Vance.
For three days, Elena recovered. She was given the best food, medical care, and security money could buy. Yet, she felt like a bird in a gilded cage. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the cold river water, the flashing muzzle fires, and the terrifyingly calm face of Nikolai Borzov.
On the fourth night, she couldn't sleep. She walked down the grand hallway and saw the light on in Nikolai's study. The door was slightly ajar.
She peered inside and gasped. Nikolai was sitting at his desk, his shirt off. His back was covered in deep, bleeding lacerations—shrapnel wounds from the warehouse explosion that he had completely hidden from her. He was trying to stitch his own shoulder in the mirror, his muscles tense, sweat pouring down his face, but the angle was impossible.
Without thinking, the nurse in Elena took over. She pushed the door open, walked inside, and gently took the needle and thread from his hand.
Nikolai froze, his gray eyes flashing with dangerous instinct. But when he saw it was her, the tension slowly bled from his frame.
"You should be resting," he murmured.
"And you should be in a hospital," Elena replied softly, pouring antiseptic onto a clean cloth. "Hold still. This is going to hurt."
As she carefully cleaned and stitched his wounds, the silence between them grew thick. "Why did you jump into the river for me, Nikolai? You didn't know me. I’m just a bankrupt nurse carrying a child that belongs to a man who abandoned me the moment the pregnancy test turned positive."
Nikolai stared straight ahead, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "Thirty years ago, my mother was a poor immigrant in the East Ward. She got sick. The wealthy hospitals turned her away because she didn't have insurance or citizenship. A young, underground doctor treated her for free in a basement, giving her two more years of life. Two years I got to spend with my mother before she passed."
He turned his head slightly, looking up at Elena. "When I saw you on that bridge, holding onto that bag of medicine like it was gold, I didn't see a stranger. I saw the person who gave me my mother. The city abandoned you, Elena. But I protect the people who protect the helpless."
Elena’s heart swelled, a profound, unexpected warmth blooming in her chest. This man was a monster to the world, but to her, he was a shield.
Suddenly, Nikolai’s encrypted phone buzzed on the desk. He answered it, his face turning to stone.

"Speak."
The voice on the other end was frantic. "Boss, Vance found out she's alive. He's just released a press conference. He's framing you for kidnapping Nurse Elena Ward, and he’s authorized a city-wide raid on every property you own. He has your clinic patients rounded up in the old town square. He says if you don't turn yourself and the girl in by midnight... he's going to clear the slums with bulldozers."
