Chapter 6 - A NEW DYNASTY

The sound of the gunshot seemed to tear the night apart.
Elena closed her eyes, waiting for the pain. But instead, she felt a heavy weight collapse against her.
She opened her eyes to see Nikolai standing in front of her. He had thrown his body into the line of fire. The bullet had torn into his chest, right over his heart.
"Nikolai!" Elena screamed, catching him as he fell to his knees.
Vance laughed hysterically, but his triumph was cut short. A dozen police officers tackled the councilman to the ground, slamming his face into the concrete and cuffing him as the media cameras captured his violent arrest in real-time.
Elena dropped to the floor of the stage, her medical training taking over despite the blinding tears. She pressed her hands against Nikolai’s chest, trying to stem the bright red blood spilling over his black shirt. "No, no, no! You can't die! You promised me! You promised you'd protect us!"
Nikolai gasped for air, his pale gray eyes losing their focus. He reached up, his bloody fingers tracing her jawline one last time. "You... are safe now, Elena. The city... knows the truth."
"I don't care about the city!" she sobbed, pressing down harder as his eyes slowly closed. "Nikolai! Stay with me!"
The ambulance rushed onto the square, sirens wailing, but to Elena, the world went completely silent.
One Year Later.
The East Ward had completely changed. The old, crumbling slums were gone, replaced not by luxury condos, but by the Borzov Memorial Medical Center—a massive, state-of-the-art free clinic funded entirely by the restructured assets of the Borzov estate.
Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the chief administrator's office, looking down at the bustling courtyard below. In her arms, she held a healthy, black-haired, grey-eyed one-year-old boy.
"Look at that, Leo," she whispered, kissing the baby's forehead. "Your father built all of this."
The door to the office opened quietly. Elena didn't turn around; she already knew the heavy, certain cadence of the footsteps.
A pair of strong, scarred arms wrapped around her waist from behind, a warm chin resting gently on her shoulder.
"He looks more like me every day," Nikolai’s deep voice rumbled against her back.
Elena smiled, turning in his embrace to kiss his lips.
The bullet had missed his heart by a mere millimeter. It had taken three surgeries and two months in a coma, but the Ghost of the Docks was too stubborn to die. He had officially faked his death to the public, allowing his criminal empire to dissolve into a massive, legitimate humanitarian foundation run entirely by Elena.
The underworld thought Nikolai Borzov was gone. The city thought he was a martyr.
But as Nikolai looked down at his beautiful wife and his thriving son, he knew the truth. He hadn't died that night in the square. He had finally started to live.

"Are you ready to go home, Mrs. Borzov?" he asked, a rare, genuine smile softening his dangerous face.
Elena gripped his hand tightly, the very same hand that had pulled her from the freezing river. "Always."
