Chapter 5 - THE HUNTED AND THE HEIR

The trap was set, and it was flawless. By framing Nikolai for kidnapping a pregnant nurse, Councilman Vance had weaponized the entire city's police force and public sympathy.
"You can't go," Elena pleaded, tears streaming down her face as Nikolai strapped weapons into his harness. "It's a trap! He will kill you on sight and claim it was a rescue mission!"
"If I don't go, the families in the East Ward die tonight," Nikolai said, checking the magazine of his pistol. He walked over to her, his hand gently resting on her cheek. "And I don't let politicians dictate my terms."
"I'm coming with you," Elena said fiercely, stepping forward.
"Absolutely not. It's too dangerous."
"Nikolai, look at me!" she demanded, placing his hand onto the high curve of her belly. The baby kicked violently against his palm. "Vance wants me dead because I am the living proof of his corruption. If I stay hidden, you're just a criminal fighting the law. If I walk into that square alive, the truth walks with me. Let me fight for my patients. Let me fight with you."
Nikolai stared at her, amazed by the sheer force of her will. For the first time, a ghost of a smile touched his lips. "You are a dangerous woman, Elena Ward."
Midnight arrived. The old town square of the East Ward was surrounded by floodlights, armored police vans, and hundreds of terrified, freezing citizens guarded by Vance's heavily armed private security.
Councilman Vance stood on a raised stage, speaking into a array of media microphones. "We will not let the criminal element terrorize our healthcare workers! We will find Elena Ward and bring her kidnapper, Nikolai Borzov, to justice!"
Suddenly, the floodlights flickered and died, plunging the square into darkness.
A collective gasp echoed through the crowd. When the emergency generator kicked in seconds later, casting a harsh, pale light over the stage, two figures were walking calmly through the center aisle of the square.
It was Nikolai Borzov, dressed in his black overcoat, and beside him, walking proudly with her head held high, was Elena Ward.
"Look!" someone in the crowd screamed. "It’s the nurse! She’s alive!"
Vance’s face went entirely pale. "Guards! Shoot him! He’s using her as a hostage!" the councilman screamed into the microphone, his composure shattering.
But before a single guard could raise a weapon, the giant electronic billboard overlooking the square flashed to life. Instead of Vance's campaign ad, a video began to play.
It was a hidden camera recording from the ferry bridge. It clearly showed Councilman Vance’s personal chief of security shoving Elena off the edge into the raging river. The audio was crystal clear: “Make it look like a suicide. The councilman wants her clinic closed permanently.”
Nikolai had hacked the city’s main broadcast feed.
The crowd erupted into furious shouts. The police officers, realizing they had been used as pawns in a political assassination attempt, lowered their weapons, turning their gaze toward Vance.
"This is a lie! A deepfake!" Vance shrieked, backing away on the stage. "Get them away from me!"
Nikolai stepped onto the stage, his presence radiating pure, lethal authority. He didn't draw his gun. He simply walked up to Vance, grabbed the politician by his expensive silk tie, and dragged him to the edge of the platform, forcing him to look at the angry crowd below.
"The game is over, Vance," Nikolai whispered.
But Vance, driven mad by the total ruin of his life, smiled a sick, twisted smile. He reached into his coat pocket. "If I go down... I'm taking the brat with me!"

He pulled a small, concealed derringer pistol and aimed it directly at Elena’s stomach.
BANG.
