Chapter 2 - THE SAFE HOUSE OF SECRETS

The sedan didn't stop at a penthouse or a flashy mansion. Instead, it snaked through the labyrinthine alleyways of the industrial district, finally pulling into a heavily guarded, converted brick warehouse. Inside, however, was a sprawling, ultra-modern fortress.
Elena was escorted into a warm, fire-lit room. A female doctor in a pristine white coat was already waiting.
"Check the child first," Nikolai ordered from the doorway, lighting a cigarette. The smoke curled around his cold features like a halo of shadow.
After an agonizing thirty minutes of ultrasounds and examinations, the doctor finally smiled. "The baby is resilient, Mr. Borzov. Strong heartbeat. The amniotic fluid protected him from the impact, but Ms. Ward needs rest, warmth, and high-protein nutrition immediately."
Elena let out a breath she felt she’d been holding since the bridge. "Thank you," she whispered, covering her belly.
Nikolai waved the doctor out. He walked over, tossing Elena’s completely dried and organized backpack onto the table beside her bed. The insulin pens and vitamins were lined up like soldiers.
"My men salvaged your clinic's records from the wet bag," Nikolai said, leaning against the bedpost. "You've been stealing expired or 'discarded' medical supplies from St. Jude’s Hospital to run an illegal clinic in the slums of the East Ward."
Elena stiffened. "I didn't steal them to make money. The hospital throws away perfectly good medication because of bureaucratic expiration dates, while pregnant women and homeless children die of treatable infections three blocks away! When the board found out, they fired me. And tonight..."
"Tonight, someone wanted to make sure your lips were sealed permanently," Nikolai finished. "Do you know who the primary donor for St. Jude’s Hospital is, Elena?"
Elena shook her head, her eyes wide.
"It’s Councilman Thomas Vance," Nikolai said, his gray eyes darkening to the color of a stormy sea. "The man running for Mayor on a platform of 'cleaning up the slums.' It turns out, his real estate company just bought the land your underground clinic sits on. If the public finds out he's forcing sick, impoverished families out into the winter to build luxury condos, his campaign is dead."
Elena gasped. "He... he had me thrown off that bridge? But I don't have any proof against him! I just wanted to treat my patients!"
"Vance doesn't leave loose ends," Nikolai said coldly. "But he made a fatal mistake. He tried to drown you on my territory."

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the room burst open. One of Nikolai’s enforcers, bleeding heavily from a wound in his shoulder, stumbled in.
"Nikolai! We've been compromised! Vance’s private mercenaries... they didn't just follow us. They brought the tactical police unit they have on their payroll. They're breaching the front gates!"
