Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe air between us crackled with a sudden, electric tension.

I stood there in my faded cotton pajamas and messy mom bun, facing a billionaire who looked like he had just stepped off a magazine cover, yet carried the haunted eyes of a man who had fought too many lonely wars.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I managed to whisper, stepping back slightly. “If the press followed you—”
“I shook them,” Marcus interrupted, his voice steady as he closed the distance between us, step by deliberate step. “For the first time in my life, I used my own security detail to ditch my own convoy. I needed to see you without a screen, without a phone line, and without a corporation standing between us.”
He stopped a few feet away from me. Up close, I could see the faint exhaustion lines around his eyes, the subtle tension in his broad shoulders.
“Why?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly. “Marcus, I’m a mess. I’m a broke single mother going through a bitter divorce, hiding from my ex, and barely holding my life together. You’re... you're Marcus Whitmore. You could have any woman in the world.”
Marcus let out a dry, humorless chuckle. That’s when he reached out, slow and deliberate, giving me every chance to pull away. When I didn't, his warm fingers gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
His touch sent a violent shiver down my spine.
“Do you know what it’s like to build an empire, Emily?” he murmured, his gaze locked intensely on mine. “To have thousands of people shouting your name, praising your genius, while you go home to an empty mansion every single night? Everyone wants a piece of my success. Nobody wants me. When you fell asleep on my shoulder on that flight... it was the first time in ten years I didn't feel alone.”
My throat tightened. An overwhelming wave of empathy washed over me, instantly dissolving my fear. I saw past the billions, past the media glare, past the corporate armor. Beneath it all, Marcus was just a human being starved of genuine human connection.
“You’re not alone anymore, Marcus,” I whispered, the words slipping out before I could stop them.
He looked down at me, a profound, breathtaking vulnerability washing over his face. He leaned in slowly, the space between us shrinking to a heartbeat.
And then, his lips met mine.
It wasn't a rushed, desperate kiss. It was soft, hesitant, and filled with a quiet, pent-up longing that felt like it had been building for a lifetime. My hands instinctively found their way up to his chest, gripping the fabric of his sweater as the rest of the world melted away.
But the intoxicating bubble burst with a sudden, violent crash.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Furious pounding echoed against the heavy exterior doors of the penthouse, accompanied by a voice that made my blood run instantly cold.

“Open the damn door, Emily! I know you're in there, you ungrateful bitch! Open up!”
It was Greg. My ex-husband. And he had found us.
