Chapter 9 - The Ultimate ShowdownThe executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Whitmore Technologies was an arena of pure, unadulterated hostility.

When the heavy mahogany doors swung open, every head turned.

Seated around the massive glass conference table were a dozen elderly, ruthless board members. At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling—Marcus’s longtime senior vice president and second-in-command—smirking with smug, venomous triumph.

Marcus stood at the opposite end of the table, his fists clenched against the glass, his eyes blazing with cold, furious fire.

“You’re outvoted, Marcus,” Sterling sneered, sliding a thick legal document across the table. “The board has reviewed the emergency dossier. Your romantic distraction has compromised company security. Sign the resignation papers, hand over your voting shares, and walk away quietly with your billionaire pension. Otherwise, we arrest your precious little girlfriend for corporate espionage.”

Marcus’s voice dropped to a low, lethal growl. “Touch her, Sterling, and I will dismantle this company brick by brick until there is nothing left for you to inherit.”

“You can't threaten us anymore, Marcus!” Sterling laughed mockingly. “You’re finished!”

“Am I?”

A clear, ringing voice cut sharply through the heavy air of the boardroom.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

I walked through the double doors, my head held high, my posture straight, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer over a simple dress. I didn't look like a terrified single mother anymore. I looked like a woman with nothing left to lose.

Marcus’s head whipped around. His eyes widened in shock. “Emily? What are you doing here? I told Vance to keep you safe!”

“You protect me, Marcus. Let me protect you for once,” I said softly, walking right up to the head of the table and slamming a sleek silver flash drive down onto the glass right in front of Arthur Sterling.

Sterling sneered, looking up at me with open contempt. “And what is this supposed to be, little girl? Another sob story?”

“That,” I said clearly, my voice echoing off the glass walls, “is a complete digital ledger of every offshore account, illegal kickback, and corporate bribe Arthur Sterling has funneled out of Whitmore Tech over the past three years to fund his private shell company.”

Sterling’s smirk instantly vanished. Color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. “That’s... that’s a lie! Fabricated garbage!”

“Is it?”

Suddenly, the side wall screens lit up automatically.

Vance stood by the AV console, pressing play. High-definition security footage, intercepted bank transfers, and recorded phone conversations of Sterling conspiring with rival competitors flooded the massive boardroom screens in vivid, undeniable detail.

The board members gasped, turning horrified glares toward Sterling.

Marcus stared at me, sheer awe, adoration, and fierce pride blazing in his dark eyes.

“You... how did you get this?” Sterling stammered, scrambling to his feet, sweating profusely.

“Greg wasn't the only one who kept records of his shady business associates,” I said smoothly, stepping closer to Sterling. “Before my ex-husband partnered with your firm in an illegal smear campaign against me, he backed up his files to my cloud storage. You thought I was just a helpless single mom, Sterling. You underestimated the person standing in the shadows.”

Marcus didn't waste a single second. He pushed off the table, walked swiftly around it, and stood right beside me.

“Vance,” Marcus commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “Have federal marshals escort Mr. Sterling out of my building in handcuffs. And draft an immediate motion to seize all of his personal assets.”

As security guards grabbed a screaming, flailing Sterling and dragged him out of the boardroom, absolute silence settled over the remaining board members. They collectively lowered their heads in silent submission.

Marcus turned to me, the cold CEO armor completely gone, replaced by the man who had held my hand on an airplane.
