Chapter 5 - The Ex-Husband’s ThreatThe nameplate on my old life had just smashed through the glass of my new one.

“Greg?” I gasped, stepping back from Marcus, my face draining of all color. “How... how did he find this address? This place is supposed to be top secret!”

Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. The tender, vulnerable man from a moment ago vanished, replaced by the ruthless CEO who crushed corporate competitors without blinking.

“Vance,” Marcus said sharply, tapping an earpiece comm link in his ear.

“Already on it, Mr. Whitmore,” Vance’s voice crackled back instantly. “Building security has intercepted him at the service elevator. He’s making a scene.”

“Bring him up,” Marcus commanded coldly.

“Marcus, no!” I panicked, grabbing his arm. “You don't understand! Greg is vindictive, loud, and he’s foaming at the mouth for a payday. If he sees you here with me, he’ll twist it into a scandal that will destroy whatever privacy I have left. He’ll use Annie against me in the custody battle!”

Marcus covered my trembling hand with his large, warm palm. His touch radiated absolute, unshakeable power.

“Emily, look at me,” he said, his voice deep, calm, and commanding. “Let him come. Nobody—and I mean nobody—is going to take your daughter from you, and nobody is ever going to intimidate you again. I promise you that.”

A minute later, the private elevator chimed.

The doors slid open, and Greg marched out, flanked by two towering security guards who held him firmly by both arms. His hair was disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot, smelling heavily of cheap scotch and pure, unadulterated rage.

“Let me go, you oversized apes!” Greg thrashed, before his eyes locked onto me standing beside a towering glass wall in a multi-million-dollar penthouse—and then locked onto Marcus Whitmore standing right beside me.

Greg stopped struggling. His jaw dropped so low I thought it might unhinge.

He stared at Marcus. Then he stared at the luxurious surroundings. Then back to Marcus, recognition slowly dawning in his greedy, panicked brain.

“Holy shit,” Greg breathed, his voice trembling with disbelief. “You’re... you’re Marcus Whitmore. The tech billionaire.”

Greg’s shock morphed into a grotesque, triumphant sneer. He puffed out his chest, looking at me with absolute venom.

“Well, well, well,” Greg sneered, laughing maliciously. “Look at pious little Emily! Left me for a week and crawled straight into the bed of one of the richest men on the planet! How much are he and your services costing, Em? Is this your new sugar daddy?”

My face burned with a humiliating, fiery rage. I stepped forward, raising my hand to slap him across the face, but Marcus’s arm shot out, blocking me effortlessly.

Marcus didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply walked toward Greg with the terrifying, slow grace of a predator cornering its prey.

“Mr. Carter,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register that made the hair on my arms stand up. “You have exactly three seconds to turn around, walk back into that elevator, and delete every single thought of extortion from your pathetic mind.”

Greg sneered, emboldened by alcohol and greed. “Or what, billionaire? You gonna sue me? Sue away! I’ll go straight to the tabloids tomorrow morning! I’ll tell the whole world about your little secret girlfriend and her illegitimate baby! Unless... you wire me two hundred thousand dollars right now as a quiet little 'go away' fee.”

Marcus didn't blink. He pulled a sleek black smartphone from his pocket, tapped a single button, and put it on speaker.

“Vance,” Marcus spoke clearly into the phone. “Execute Protocol Omega against Apex Global and Carter Logistics. And have our legal team file immediate emergency custody termination papers for gross negligence, substance abuse, and financial fraud against Gregory Carter. Ensure he never sees a courtroom, a dime, or his daughter ever again.”

Greg’s smirk vanished instantly. Color drained from his face. “Wait... what? You can't do that! Who do you think you are?!”

Marcus stepped right up until he was towering over Greg, his eyes burning with absolute ice.

“I am the man who owns the mortgages on your apartment, the debts of your company, and the air you're currently breathing,” Marcus whispered softly. “Vance. Throw him out.”
