Chapter 3 - The Audit Speaks“Mia? What are you doing?” Ryan’s voice dropped its polished corporate tone, replaced by sudden, sharp irritation as I stopped fifty feet from the stage. “If you came here to make a scene—'

“I didn't come to make a scene, Ryan,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom thanks to the directional microphone clip I had pinned to my lapel. “I came to congratulate you on your new company. And on your new funding.”

Ryan’s face tightened. “Security, please escort—'

“Don't bother,” a sharp, calm voice interrupted from the side entrance.

Daniel Cho, my attorney, walked into the ballroom accompanied by two federal process servers and a senior inspector from the state’s financial fraud division. The murmur in the crowd erupted into a wall of anxious whispers.

“Mr. Brooks, I wouldn't rush security,” Daniel said smoothly, stepping up to the base of the stage and holding up a thick stack of legal documents. “My name is Daniel Cho representing Mia Carter. We aren't here for a wedding gift. We’re here to serve an emergency injunction against Brooks Capital Partners and freeze every asset tied to Halcyon Strategic Holdings.”

Ryan turned the color of ash. “This is absurd! What is the meaning of this?”

“The meaning is simple, Ryan,” I said, taking another step forward and opening my leather folder. “Halcyon Strategic Holdings isn't an independent institutional investor. It’s a domestic shell company registered under a false corporate registry. And the initial seed capital—all six hundred and twelve thousand dollars of it—was illegally siphoned from my personal family trust during our marriage.”

Lauren gasped, clutching her stomach and taking a staggering step backward on the stage. “That’s a lie! She’s crazy!”

“Is it a lie, Lauren?” I asked, looking straight at her. I pulled out a printed email chain and held it up. “Because your signature is right here on the transfer authorizations. You coordinated with the offshore account managers, whispering that ‘she never looks closely anyway.’ Except this time, I looked.”
