Chapter 6 - The Intruder in the Shadows

Aria spun around, instantly raising her gun toward the hallway leading to the kitchen. Julian dropped the packing tape, stumbling backward against the wall.
“Who’s back there?!” Aria shouted, her composure cracking under the sudden pressure.
Footsteps pounded against the hardwood floor—heavy, fast, and aggressive. Before Aria could pivot her aim, a dark figure lunged out of the hallway, tackling her violently to the ground.
The silver pistol flew from Aria’s hand, skidding across the tile and sliding under the living room sofa.
“Run!” a familiar, raspy voice yelled.
It wasn't Sienna. It was a man I had never seen before—tall, rugged, with a jagged scar running down his left jawline and wild, desperate eyes.
Aria shrieked, kicking wildly at her attacker, managing to land a heavy blow to his ribs. The man grunted in pain, rolling off her. Aria scrambled to her feet, gasping for air, searching frantically for her weapon.
“Get the girl!” Aria screamed at Julian.
Julian stood frozen like a deer in headlights, but the strange man didn't hesitate. He grabbed my arm, yanking me and Chloe toward the front door.
“Who are you?!” I cried out, terrified.
“No time! Move!” the man shouted, ripping the front door open and dragging us out onto the front lawn just as Sienna’s car screeched to a halt at the curb.
Doors flew open. Sienna leaped out of her sedan, phone in hand, dialing emergency services. But before we could reach the safety of the street, the front door of the house banged open behind us.
Aria stood on the porch, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker she had grabbed from the living room, her eyes burning with pure malice.
“You’re not going anywhere, Nora!” she screamed, raising the poker to hurl it at us.
Suddenly, a loud siren wailed in the distance. Red and blue flashing lights illuminated the end of our street. Police cruisers were closing in fast.
Aria froze, cursed loudly, and slammed the door shut, retreating back inside to destroy whatever evidence she could before the authorities arrived.
On the lawn, shaking uncontrollably, I pulled Chloe into my arms. I turned to look at the mysterious man who had just saved our lives.
He was breathing heavily, clutching his bruised ribs, staring at me with an expression of profound, aching sorrow.
“Who are you?” I demanded again, my voice shaking.

The man wiped a drop of blood from his lip, looked me dead in the eye, and said something that shattered my entire reality.
“My name is David Vance. And I’m here to stop my family before they kill you.”
