Chapter 16 - Into the Lion’s Den

I didn't hesitate. I didn't call the police. The moment Chloe was threatened, every ounce of fear dissolved into pure, cold determination.

I grabbed my car keys, but before I walked out the door, I slipped Marcus’s encrypted satellite tracker into the lining of my coat and activated the silent emergency beacon linked directly to his secure private network. If I walked into Victor’s trap, Marcus and his tactical team would have our exact coordinates within fifteen minutes.

The address Victor sent led to an abandoned industrial shipyard on the outskirts of San Diego—a sprawling complex of rusted warehouses, shipping containers, and crashing waves against the dark bay.

My car tires crunched over gravel as I pulled up to Warehouse 47.

The night air was freezing, laden with the smell of salt and old iron. I stepped out of the vehicle, slamming the door shut. The echo bounced off the corrugated metal walls like a gunshot.

“I’m here, Victor!” I shouted into the cavernous opening of the warehouse. “Let David go!”

Heavy footsteps echoed from the upper catwalks. Slowly, out of the shadows, Victor Thorne descended the metal stairs. He wasn't holding a knife anymore; instead, a sleek, silenced pistol rested casually in his right hand.

Behind him, two armed mercenaries dragged David forward, throwing him roughly onto the concrete floor near my feet. David coughed, spitting blood, his eyes wide with terror as he looked up at me.

“Nora… you shouldn't have come…” David rasped.

Victor stepped down onto the floor, clapping his hands slowly, a sickening grin plastered across his face.

“Magnificent,” Victor mocked, spreading his arms wide. “Such loyalty. Such absolute stupidity. Did you really think you could walk into my domain and walk out alive?”

“You won’t get away with this, Victor,” I said, locking my eyes onto his, refusing to flinch. “The authorities already know who you are. The financial trail leads straight back to your shell corporations.”

Victor chuckled darkly. “Let them trace it. By the time the police reach this shipyard, you and my dear brother will be nothing more than cold statistics in a tragic waterfront accident.”

He raised the silenced pistol, leveling it directly at my chest.
