Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

Aria’s clothes were disheveled, her hair wild, and her eyes wide with unhinged desperation. The police were still upstairs, entirely unaware that we had slipped down into the basement.
“You just don't know when to stay down, do you, Nora?” Aria sneered, stepping closer, blocking the only exit out of the basement. “Ten years of patience. Ten years of playing the sweet, helpful in-law. And you had to ruin it all because your bratty kid opened her mouth.”
“You killed my mother,” I said, my voice echoing in the damp cellar, steady despite the terror gripping my soul. “And you tried to kill me.”
“Your mother was a self-righteous bitch who deserved what she got,” Aria spat back, raising the pistol directly at my face. “And you’re just as arrogant. But don't worry. This time, there won't be any hospital tests. No doctors to save you. Just a tragic basement accident.”
David slowly stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body. “Aria, stop. The house is surrounded. There’s nowhere to run. If you shoot us, the SWAT team will blow this door open in thirty seconds.”
“Then I’ll take you both with me!” Aria shrieked, her finger tightening on the trigger.
Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. I looked at the metal lockbox containing the evidence of my mother’s murder. I looked at David, who had risked everything to expose his own family’s darkness. And I thought of my little girl, Chloe, waiting upstairs with Sienna.
I wasn't going to die here.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, I didn't wait for Aria to shoot. I grabbed a heavy glass jar filled with chemical samples from the workbench and hurled it with every ounce of my remaining strength straight at Aria’s face.
Crash!
The jar shattered against her shoulder, throwing her aim off entirely.
Bang!
A bullet whined past my ear, embedding itself deep into the concrete wall behind us.
David didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, tackling Aria hard against the metal shelving units. Tools, jars, and equipment cascaded down around them in a deafening clatter. Aria screamed, flailing wildly, but David pinned her arms to the floor, wresting the pistol from her grip and tossing it far across the concrete room.
At that exact moment, the heavy basement door at the top of the stairs blew wide open.
Flashlights cut through the darkness, followed by the heavy boots of armed police officers.
“Police! Drop your weapon! Hands where I can see them!”
Aria stopped struggling, her chest heaving as officers swarmed down the stairs, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists and dragging her upright.

As they hauled her past me, Aria glared with venomous hatred. “You think this is over? Julian is still your husband. He’s tied to this, too!”
I didn't flinch. I looked her dead in the eye and said, “Julian is going to prison for the rest of his life. And so are you.”
