CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Everyone Expected to Die

The iron gates slammed shut with a deafening metallic crash.
Every conversation in Cell Block D stopped.
Every pair of eyes turned toward the newest inmate.
She walked slowly.
No handcuffs.
No trembling.
No desperate glances.
Just calm, measured footsteps that echoed through one of the most violent women's prisons in America.
The guards whispered among themselves.
"That's her."
"The transfer."
"They say she nearly killed three armed men before they arrested her."
Another guard shook his head.
"No... that's just a rumor."
The new prisoner never reacted.
She simply carried her small duffel bag and quietly looked around.
Her prison file listed only one name.
Emma Carter.
Age: 29.
Sentence: 18 years.
Reason...
Classified.
Inside Block D, one woman ruled everything.
Raven Kane.
Six feet tall.
Covered in prison tattoos.
A scar running across her cheek.
She had spent twelve years breaking anyone who dared disrespect her.
No one refused Raven.
No one survived challenging Raven.
The guards avoided eye contact with her.
The inmates lowered their heads whenever she walked past.
She didn't need weapons.
Fear was enough.
As Emma entered the cafeteria for her first meal, whispers spread like wildfire.
"Poor girl..."
"She'll be dead before sunrise."
"Raven always tests the newcomers."
Emma calmly picked up a metal tray.
Mashed potatoes.
Bread.
Soup.
Nothing more.
She sat alone near the back wall.
Silent.
That irritated Raven immediately.
Most newcomers begged.
Some cried.
Others tried making friends.
But this woman...
Acted like she didn't even notice who controlled the prison.
Raven slowly stood.
The room instantly became silent.
She grabbed another inmate's tray and walked toward Emma.
The guards noticed...
But none of them moved.
They had seen this scene hundreds of times.
It always ended the same way.
Raven slammed the tray onto Emma's table.
Soup splashed across Emma's uniform.
"You sitting in my spot?"
Emma slowly wiped the soup from her sleeve.
Then looked up.
For several long seconds...
Neither woman spoke.
Finally Emma answered quietly.
"I didn't know the prison belonged to you."
Gasps filled the cafeteria.
One inmate dropped her spoon.
Another whispered,
"Oh no..."
Raven smiled.
The kind of smile that usually came right before someone left on a stretcher.
"You've got courage."
Emma nodded.
"No."
"I just don't scare easily."
The cafeteria exploded with nervous laughter.
Raven leaned closer.
"Tomorrow."
"In the yard."
"You and me."
"No guards."
"No rules."
"If you survive..."
"You can keep breathing in my prison."
Emma looked directly into Raven's cold eyes.
Then calmly picked up her spoon.
"I'll be there."
She returned to eating.
As if nothing had happened.
Even Raven looked surprised.
Because for the first time in years...
May you like
Someone had accepted her challenge...
Without fear.
