CHAPTER 1 — The Old Man Everyone Laughed At

The cafeteria exploded with laughter.

Metal trays slammed against the tables as hundreds of inmates pointed at the frail old janitor sprawled across the dirty floor.

Marcus folded his tattooed arms across his massive chest and grinned.

"Look at him."

"I barely touched him."

"He falls apart like an old scarecrow."

His gang burst into even louder laughter.

Walter slowly reached for his broken glasses.

One lens had popped out.

His wrinkled hands trembled—not from fear, but from age.

Or so everyone believed.

He carefully wiped the dust from the frame with an old handkerchief before placing the glasses back on his face.

Then...

He looked directly into Marcus's eyes.

Not angry.

Not frightened.

Just...calm.

That calmness irritated Marcus far more than any insult could have.

"You got something to say, Grandpa?"

Walter quietly picked up his mop.

"I'm only here to clean."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Marcus stepped closer until they were only inches apart.

"I wasn't asking what you're here for."

"I asked if you're scared."

The cafeteria became silent.

Every inmate knew what usually happened next.

Marcus loved making examples out of people.

Especially weak ones.

Walter sighed softly.

"I've lived long enough to learn something."

Marcus smirked.

"Oh really?"

"The loudest man in the room usually isn't the strongest."

For a split second...

The smile disappeared from Marcus's face.

No one had ever spoken to him like that.

Not guards.

Not prisoners.

Not even wardens.

The room froze.

Then Marcus burst into laughter.

"You've got guts."

"But guts don't keep old men alive."

Without warning...

He grabbed Walter's mop...

Snapped it clean in half...

And threw the broken pieces across the cafeteria.

The inmates roared.

Walter quietly stared at the shattered wood.

Then bent down...

Collected every single piece...

And stacked them neatly beside the trash cart.

No anger.

No protest.

Nothing.

That somehow made Marcus even more furious.

"Look at him."

"He won't even fight back."

"What a pathetic old fool."

One of Marcus's friends suddenly walked behind Walter...

Pulled the old man's cap off...

And tossed it across the room.

Another inmate kicked over his cleaning bucket.

Dirty gray water flooded the cafeteria floor.

The crowd erupted again.

Walter slowly walked toward the spilled water.

Without saying a word...

He knelt.

And began wiping it up with an old rag.

The silence became strangely uncomfortable.

Even several correctional officers standing nearby exchanged confused glances.

Officer Daniels frowned.

"That's enough."

Marcus looked toward him.

"What?"

"You gonna arrest me?"

Daniels hesitated.

Everyone knew Marcus.

Six assault charges inside prison.

Three guards hospitalized.

Countless fights.

Even officers avoided provoking him unless absolutely necessary.

Daniels clenched his jaw...

But stepped back.

Walter noticed.

He simply smiled faintly.

"It's alright, Officer."

"I'll clean it."

Those words somehow sounded heavier than they should have.

That evening...

Most inmates forgot about the incident.

Except Marcus.

Something about that old man's eyes refused to leave his mind.

There had been no fear.

No humiliation.

No hatred.

Only complete confidence.

It bothered him.

Later that night...

Walter finished cleaning the empty cafeteria.

He pushed his cart into a small storage room deep inside the prison basement.

The security camera outside showed him entering.

But what happened inside...

No camera ever recorded.

Walter quietly locked the door.

His bent back slowly straightened.

The limp disappeared.

He removed his thick glasses.

Then reached beneath his worn gray uniform...

Pulling out a perfectly folded black leather notebook.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Each showed prison inmates.

Every face had handwritten notes beside it.

Names.

Crimes.

Behavior.

Psychological evaluations.

The very first photo...

Marcus.

Across the picture...

Someone had written in red ink.

PRIMARY TARGET.

Walter closed the notebook.

His tired expression vanished completely.

For the first time...

His blue eyes looked sharp enough to frighten anyone.

He whispered only six words.

"So... you've finally revealed yourself."

Then the storage room lights switched off.

Far above...

Marcus laughed with his gang...

Completely unaware...

That he had just declared war on the only man in the prison who had entered willingly.

And the old janitor wasn't there to clean floors.

May you like

He was there...

To clean out monsters.
