CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Prison Walls

For most people...
The story was over.
Marcus had been arrested.
The corrupt guards were in handcuffs.
The prison was finally under control.
Television crews gathered outside the front gates, reporting that one of the largest corruption networks ever uncovered inside a state prison had been destroyed.
But Walter wasn't celebrating.
As federal agents boxed up the evidence, he quietly examined the tiny recorder hidden beneath his old cleaning cart one last time.
"There has to be something we missed," he murmured.
A young federal analyst approached him.
"Commander Hayes, we've reviewed almost every recording."
"Almost?"
"We're still processing the final two hours."
Walter's eyes narrowed.
"The last two hours are usually where careless people become honest."
Minutes later, the analyst rushed back into the operations room.
"You need to hear this."
The recording began with Marcus speaking in a whisper.
"I've done everything you asked."
A second voice answered.
Calm.
Cold.
Distorted by an electronic voice changer.
"You've served your purpose."
Marcus sounded confused.
"What about the money you promised?"
Silence.
Then the mysterious voice replied,
"There won't be any money."
"There won't be any witnesses either."
Walter immediately paused the recording.
"Play that again."
The analyst replayed it.
Walter closed his eyes.
He wasn't listening to the words anymore.
He was listening to the breathing.
The rhythm.
The slight hesitation before each sentence.
He had heard it before.
Years ago.
Somewhere he wished he had forgotten.
Another agent asked quietly,
"You recognize him?"
Walter didn't answer.
Instead, he opened an old notebook he had carried for decades.
Hidden inside was a faded photograph of five young federal agents standing together after completing an undercover operation.
Four of them were smiling.
The fifth man's face had been crossed out with black ink.
Beneath the picture was a single handwritten word:
TRAITOR.
Walter whispered the name almost unwillingly.
"It can't be..."
"Richard."
Every agent in the room looked at him.
"You mean Richard Kane?"
Walter nodded slowly.
"My former partner."
"The man everyone believed died twenty-two years ago."
The room fell silent.
If Walter was right...
Everything they had uncovered inside the prison was only one small piece of a much larger criminal empire.
And the man controlling it knew Walter was still alive.
Across town, inside a heavily guarded transport vehicle, Marcus sat handcuffed to the floor.
Suddenly...
The truck stopped.
The driver didn't speak.
The rear doors slowly opened.
Standing outside was a man in a black suit.
His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of an umbrella.
Marcus smiled with relief.
"I knew you'd come."
The stranger quietly raised a silenced pistol.
"You know too much."
Marcus's smile disappeared.
One suppressed shot echoed through the rain.
May you like
The transport officers never had time to react.
The mastermind had just erased his most dangerous witness.
