CHAPTER 8 — The Man Who Refused to Stay Dead

The assassination of Marcus shocked the entire country.
News stations called it a coordinated attack.
Federal investigators called it something else.
A warning.
Walter stood silently in the evidence room, staring at the photograph of Richard Kane.
Twenty-two years earlier, Richard had been more than a partner.
He had been Walter's closest friend.
They had trained together.
Gone undercover together.
Saved each other's lives more times than either could count.
Then, during an operation against an international crime syndicate...
Richard disappeared.
Official reports claimed he had been killed in an explosion.
Walter had attended the funeral himself.
Or so he believed.
A young agent entered the room carrying a sealed envelope.
"It was delivered anonymously."
Walter opened it.
Inside was a single chess piece.
A black king.
Beneath it lay a handwritten note.
You always taught me to think five moves ahead.
Now try to catch me.
— Richard
Walter folded the note without saying a word.
Director Bennett looked at him.
"What does it mean?"
Walter stared out the window.
"It means this was never about Marcus."
"It was always about me."
Just then, alarms sounded throughout the federal command center.
Every computer screen flashed the same message.
CONFIDENTIAL DATABASE BREACH DETECTED
Thousands of undercover identities were being stolen.
Safe houses.
Witness locations.
Active investigations.
Years of classified operations were disappearing in real time.
One analyst shouted,
"They're inside our entire network!"
Walter immediately understood.
"The prison operation..."
"It wasn't their objective."
"It was their distraction."
While every federal resource had focused on Marcus...
Richard Kane had launched the largest intelligence theft in agency history.
Walter closed the old notebook he had carried for decades.
For the first time since arriving at the prison...
He smiled.
Not because the danger had passed.
But because he finally knew where to look.
He placed the black chess king into his pocket.
Then quietly said,
"You wanted me to chase you."
"So be it."
He turned toward the waiting agents.
"Pack your bags."
"We're no longer cleaning up one prison."
"We're going after the man who built the entire empire."
As thunder rolled across the sky, Walter walked toward a waiting helicopter.
The humble old janitor was gone.
In his place stood the legendary undercover commander who had come out of retirement for one final mission.

And somewhere in the darkness...
Richard Kane smiled, knowing that the deadliest game of his life had only just begun.
