CHAPTER 10 — The Truth No One Saw Coming

Explosions shook the steel mill.

Federal tactical teams descended from helicopters onto the rooftops.

Flashbangs lit up the darkness.

Gunfire echoed across the valley.

Inside the command center, Richard Kane watched dozens of security monitors go black.

He smiled.

"They're late."

He pressed a hidden button beneath his desk.

The entire building began to self-destruct.

Computers erased themselves.

Hard drives melted.

Secret files burned inside reinforced vaults.

Walter finally entered the control room.

For the first time in twenty-two years...

The two former partners stood face to face.

Richard looked older.

His hair had turned gray.

A scar crossed one side of his face.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

"You survived," Richard said.

Walter answered quietly,

"So did you."

For a long moment...

Neither man reached for a weapon.

Richard laughed softly.

"Do you know why I really brought you here?"

Walter remained silent.

Richard reached into a safe and removed a thin brown envelope.

He tossed it onto the table.

Walter opened it.

Inside...

Were photographs.

Old photographs.

His wife.

His young daughter.

Pictures taken decades ago.

Walter's hands trembled for the first time in years.

Richard spoke gently,

"You buried empty coffins."

Walter slowly looked up.

Richard nodded.

"They never died."

"They were placed into witness protection after the explosion."

"I made everyone believe they were gone..."

"...because it was the only way to keep them alive."

Walter's voice almost broke.

"You expect me to believe you?"

Richard sighed.

"I betrayed the agency."

"Not my best friend."

He handed Walter a flash drive.

"Everything you need is here."

"Every politician."

"Every corrupt official."

"Every criminal leader."

"And..."

"The location of your family."

Before Walter could ask another question...

A sniper's bullet shattered the window.

CRACK!

Richard staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Walter instinctively caught him before he hit the floor.

Richard smiled weakly.

"I told you..."

"There are people above me."

"They don't forgive failure."

Walter pressed his hand against the wound.

"Stay with me."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"You still haven't figured it out."

"We were never hunting the empire."

"We were only chasing..."

"...one of its branches."

With his final breath, Richard whispered,

"Protect your family..."

"...before they find them."

His eyes closed forever.

Outside...

The firefight ended.

The fortress had fallen.

Hundreds of arrests followed.

News outlets around the world declared the operation a complete victory.

Only Walter knew the truth.

The real enemy had never been Marcus.

It had never even been Richard.

Somewhere, hidden behind governments, corporations, and criminal syndicates...

Someone far more powerful had been watching every move.

Walter looked at the flash drive in his hand.

Then toward the sunrise breaking over the mountains.

He quietly slipped the drive into his pocket.

His retirement would have to wait.

Because the greatest battle of his life...

Had only just begun.

And somewhere in the shadows...

Someone whispered a single sentence after watching the news:

"Send another hunter."

The screen faded to black.

May you like

But Walter Hayes' story...

Was far from over.
