Chapter 3 - The Missing LedgerThe security supervisor stepped past Avery, planting himself firmly in the doorway. “Ma’am, sir, please step back into the room. I’ll need to log any items on the vanity and the bed per standard protocol.”

Grant clenched his fists, his eyes flashing with a desperate, trapped fury. For twelve years, he had played the charming, successful corporate manager while I built my restoration business. He thought he was the smartest man in any room. He thought he could manipulate my family, steal my brother’s livelihood, and walk away into the sunset with a blushing bride funded by our combined assets.
He didn't realize that I had spent years managing construction contracts, subcontractor disputes, and corporate audits. I knew how to lock down a site before anyone even realized the foundation was cracked.
My phone vibrated in my hand.
An email notification.
I glanced down at the screen. It was an automated alert from my banking portal, tracking a security flag on a joint commercial account I shared with Grant.
Alert: Outbound wire transfer of $145,000 initiated to an external escrow account.
The timestamp on the alert was 8:14 PM—precisely twenty minutes before Nolan and Kira’s first dance downstairs in the grand ballroom.
I looked up from my phone, locking eyes with my husband.
“You didn't just pack a bag for a weekend getaway, did you, Grant?” I asked softly, the anger inside me freezing into pure, unadulterated ice. “You tried to drain the commercial account while my brother was cutting his wedding cake.”
Grant opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Downstairs, the muffled bass of the wedding band continued to thud through the floorboards—Thump. Thump. Thump.—marking the seconds ticking down until Nolan walked back upstairs to find his bride gone, his company accounts empty, and his entire life turned to dust.
“Mr. Vance,” I said, turning back to the hotel manager without breaking eye contact with my husband. “Please dial 911. Tell them we have an active financial fraud and corporate theft in progress.”
