Chapter 2 - The Sound of FootstepsDown the carpeted hallway, the muffled thud of approaching footsteps echoed against the walls.

Two men in dark suits rounded the corner—one bearing a hotel manager’s gold name tag reading Mr. Vance, the other a burly security supervisor holding a digital clipboard. They stopped dead in their tracks as they saw Avery standing outside the open door of Suite 1814, with Grant and Kira visible behind her.

“Mrs. Holston?” the manager asked, his eyes darting nervously between Avery and the room. “Is there a problem?”

“There’s a significant security and property violation, Mr. Vance,” Avery said, stepping aside just enough for them to see the interior. “I am requesting an immediate log preservation of the electronic keycard access for this suite over the last twelve hours, as well as a formal report documenting the items currently inside the room.”

Grant’s face turned the color of ash. “You have no right to request hotel logs. This is a private matter between family members.”

“It’s a corporate liability for this hotel when unauthorized guests occupy a booked bridal suite after hours with pre-packed luggage,” Avery replied, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy cadence. She turned to the security supervisor. “Please secure the room. No one enters or leaves until the local authorities arrive.”

“Authorities?” Kira shrieked, finally losing her composure. Her ivory dress swished violently as she rushed toward the door. “You’re going to call the police over an affair? Are you out of your mind?”

“I’m not calling them over an affair, Kira,” Avery said, locking eyes with her. “I’m calling them because the travel bag on that bed contains corporate documents, bank account access keys, and property titles belonging to my brother’s construction firm—documents that Grant has no legal right to possess.”

Grant stiffened. The color drained completely from his face.

He hadn't just been planning to run away with my brother’s bride. He had been planning to clean out my brother’s company accounts on his way out the door.
