CHAPTER 1 â THE LAST HUG

The veterinary clinic had never felt so quiet.
Not even the ticking wall clock dared to interrupt the unbearable silence hanging over the room.
Outside, police cruisers lined the parking lot with their emergency lights turned off. Officers stood in small groups, hats in their hands, unable to look at one another.
Everyone knew why they were there.
Today...
The department's greatest hero was supposed to die.
Officer Alex Voronov slowly stepped through the automatic doors carrying his German Shepherd, Rex, in both arms.
The dog was enormous.
Nearly ninety pounds of muscle that had once leaped over six-foot fences, chased armed fugitives through forests, and sniffed out bombs that saved hundreds of lives.
Now...
He felt heartbreakingly light.
His body no longer resisted.
His head rested weakly against Alex's shoulder.
Each breath sounded slower than the last.
Several nurses immediately lowered their eyes.
None of them wanted Alex to see their tears.
Because everyone in the city knew Rex.
He wasn't just another police dog.
He was a legend.
For eight years they had been inseparable.
Their first mission came only three months after Rex graduated from K9 academy.
A seven-year-old autistic boy had disappeared into a frozen forest during a snowstorm.
Helicopters searched.
Drones searched.
Hundreds of volunteers searched.
Nothing.
Temperatures dropped below freezing.
The child had been missing for almost sixteen hours.
Most people had already begun preparing the parents for the worst.
Then Rex suddenly pulled Alex deep into the woods.
For nearly three miles he ignored every command to slow down.
Finally...
The dog began barking wildly beside a fallen pine tree.
Hidden underneath branches...
Curled into a tiny ball...
The little boy was still alive.
Doctors later said he had less than thirty minutes left.
From that day forward...
Rex became a national hero.
Newspapers called him...
"The Guardian Who Never Gives Up."
But that was only the beginning.
Over the next several years...
Rex located missing elderly people suffering from dementia.
He found children trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
He detected narcotics worth millions of dollars.
He uncovered hidden explosives before they could kill innocent civilians.
During one terrifying hostage situation...
An armed criminal fired directly at Alex.
Without hesitation...
Rex jumped between them.
The bullet struck the dog's protective vest instead of Alex's chest.
That single moment changed everything.
Alex later admitted...
"I should have died that day."
Instead...
Rex saved him.
Again.
And again.
And again.
The bond between them stopped being handler and dog long ago.
They became family.
Real family.
Alex never married.
Never had children.
The lonely apartment he returned to every evening always had one soul waiting at the door.
Rex.
Rain.
Snow.
Good days.
Bad days.
The dog was always there.
Always.
Until three weeks ago.
It started with exhaustion.
Then coughing.
Then refusing food.
Within days...
The once unstoppable German Shepherd could barely stand.
Specialists ran blood tests.
MRI scans.
Ultrasounds.
Every result looked worse than the last.
Kidney failure.
Fluid around the lungs.
Multiple organ dysfunction.
There was supposedly...
Nothing left to save.
Alex spent nearly forty thousand dollars consulting specialists across the country.
Every answer sounded identical.
Prepare to say goodbye.
That morning...
He signed the euthanasia papers with shaking hands.
The signature barely resembled his own handwriting.
As Dr. Elena quietly entered the examination room, Alex gently laid Rex on the cold metal table.
The dog looked at him with tired brown eyes.
Eyes that had trusted him every single day for eight years.
Alex stroked the familiar black fur between Rex's ears.
"I'm sorry, partner..."
His voice cracked.
"I couldn't save you this time."
For the first time in years...
The fearless police officer broke down.
Tears rolled freely down his face.
The officers standing nearby silently wiped their own eyes.
Nobody pretended to be strong anymore.
Because everyone knew...
Heroes deserved better endings.
Dr. Elena quietly prepared the final syringe.
The transparent liquid caught the light.
One injection.
Only seconds.
The suffering would end forever.
Alex leaned close to Rex's ear.
"I love you, buddy."
Then something impossible happened.
With almost no strength left...
Rex slowly lifted both front paws.
He wrapped them around Alex's neck.
Not like a dog asking for comfort.
Almost...
Like someone desperately trying to stop him from leaving.
The room froze.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Alex hugged him tighter.
"I'm here..."
"I'm not going anywhere."
At that exact moment...
Dr. Elena suddenly frowned.
She slowly placed both hands against Rex's abdomen.
Then moved lower.
Then stopped.
Her face changed instantly.
Confusion.
Shock.
Disbelief.
She looked back toward the ultrasound machine.
Then at Rex again.
Finally...
She whispered five words that made every police officer in the room go completely pale.
May you like
"Nobody touch that syringe... yet."
