CHAPTER 5 — THE OPERATION THAT DECIDED A HERO'S FATE

The operating room exploded into motion.

"Heart rate dropping!"

"Blood pressure is crashing!"

"Increase the oxygen!"

Doctors rushed to their positions while nurses prepared emergency medications. Bright surgical lights flooded the room as machines filled the silence with frantic alarms.

Alex stood outside the operating room doors, frozen.

He had faced armed criminals.

He had survived explosions.

He had stared down men pointing guns at his face.

But nothing had ever made him feel as helpless as watching the red "SURGERY IN PROGRESS" light above the door.

He couldn't help Rex now.

All he could do...

Was wait.

Inside the operating room, Dr. Elena took a deep breath.

"Scalpel."

The first incision was made.

Every movement had to be perfect.

One mistake...

One millimeter...

Could sever a major artery.

The team carefully worked through layers of muscle while constantly monitoring Rex's vital signs.

Minutes felt like hours.

Finally...

The metallic object appeared.

"There it is," whispered one surgeon.

The room fell silent.

The bullet fragment was lodged dangerously close to a large blood vessel.

But what shocked everyone wasn't the bullet.

It was the object attached to it.

A tiny black capsule.

No larger than a grain of rice.

Dr. Elena carefully lifted it with surgical forceps.

"What on earth..."

The anesthesiologist leaned closer.

"That's definitely electronic."

The capsule had microscopic wires wrapped around the bullet.

It wasn't medical.

It wasn't accidental.

Someone had intentionally attached it.

Dr. Elena immediately placed it into a sterile evidence container.

"Notify the police."

"No one touches this except the forensic lab."

Just as she spoke...

One of the monitors suddenly screamed again.

BEEEEEP!

"He's bleeding!"

Blood pressure dropped rapidly.

The bullet had shifted.

A small artery burst open.

"Clamp!"

"Suction!"

"More gauze!"

Blood quickly filled the surgical field.

For several terrifying seconds...

No one could even see the wound.

Dr. Elena remained calm.

"Stay with me."

"We're not losing him."

The room worked like a single machine.

Finally...

The bleeding slowed.

Then stopped.

A long breath escaped from everyone at once.

The worst seemed over.

Dr. Elena gently removed the bullet fragment from Rex's body.

The piece of metal landed softly inside the stainless-steel tray.

Clink.

Eight years of service.

Three years of hidden pain.

One tiny piece of metal.

It was finally over.

But before anyone could celebrate...

The operating room doors burst open.

A forensic officer rushed inside.

"You need to hear this immediately!"

Dr. Elena frowned.

"This isn't the time."

"It can't wait."

He held up a portable scanner.

"We scanned the capsule."

"It isn't just a tracking device."

Everyone stared.

"It contains encrypted memory."

Alex looked confused.

"Memory?"

The forensic officer nodded.

"If we're right..."

"That device has been recording everything around Rex for years."

The entire room froze.

Every conversation.

Every operation.

Every confidential briefing.

Possibly stored inside the tiny capsule.

Alex felt a chill run down his spine.

"If that's true..."

"The criminals always knew where we were."

May you like

No one realized that the biggest surprise...

Hadn't even been discovered yet.
