CHAPTER 6 — REX SAVES THEM ONE LAST TIME

Three hours later...

The surgery was over.

Rex was still alive.

Weak...

But alive.

Alex sat beside him in the recovery room, gently holding one of his paws.

"I told you we'd fight together."

The German Shepherd slowly opened his eyes.

His tail tapped the blanket once.

Just once.

But it was enough.

Alex smiled through tears.

Outside the room, detectives, cybercrime experts, and federal investigators crowded around the mysterious capsule.

The forensic laboratory worked nonstop through the night.

Just before sunrise...

The lead technician suddenly shouted,

"I got in!"

Everyone rushed toward his computer.

The encrypted storage finally opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

GPS routes.

Dates.

Audio recordings.

Encrypted messages.

One investigator whispered,

"My God..."

The tracker had transmitted information every single day for almost three years.

But then...

Another folder appeared.

It had never been transmitted.

Its title simply read:

FAILSAFE.

The technician clicked it.

A hidden video filled the screen.

The room fell completely silent.

The footage showed the masked man who had approached Rex after the shooting.

This time...

His face was completely visible.

One detective nearly dropped his coffee.

"It can't be..."

Alex stared at the screen.

His blood ran cold.

He recognized the man immediately.

Not a criminal.

Not a stranger.

It was Colonel Sergei Mikhailov, the decorated commander of the regional K9 division.

The very man who had attended Rex's award ceremonies.

The man who had shaken Alex's hand dozens of times.

The man everyone trusted.

The video showed Sergei quietly implanting the device into Rex's wound.

Then he looked directly into the hidden camera and smiled.

"You'll lead us to every investigation, old friend."

The room erupted in disbelief.

"He betrayed the department..."

"For years..."

Within minutes, tactical officers surrounded the colonel's mansion.

But they were too late.

The house was empty.

Fresh tire tracks led away from the garage.

A safe had been emptied.

Computers destroyed.

Passports missing.

On the dining table lay only one handwritten note.

Alex unfolded it.

His face turned pale as he read the single sentence.

"Your dog survived once... but next time, neither of you will."

At that exact moment...

Back at the veterinary clinic...

Rex suddenly struggled to his feet.

Despite major surgery.

Despite the pain.

He began barking furiously toward the parking lot.

The nurses looked out the window—

And saw a black SUV slowly pulling into the clinic entrance.

Its windows were completely tinted.

The engine never turned off.

Then...

The rear door quietly opened.

Someone stepped out...

May you like

Holding a rifle.

To Be Continued...
