CHAPTER 10 â THE LAST PATROL

Years passed.
Alex eventually retired from active duty.
He bought a small cabin near the forest where he and Rex had once rescued the lost little boy.
Life became peaceful.
Every morning they walked the same trail.
No radios.
No sirens.
No gunfire.
Only birds singing through the trees.
Rex's muzzle turned almost completely white.
His steps became slower.
But he never missed a single morning walk.
One crisp autumn day, Alex noticed something unusual.
Rex stopped beside a large oak tree.
Instead of continuing down the path, he quietly sat and looked up at Alex.
Those familiar brown eyes said everything.
Alex smiled sadly.
"I know."
He spread his old police jacket on the soft grass.
Rex slowly lay down on it.
Just as he had rested beside Alex after every successful mission.
Alex gently stroked his ears.
"You don't have to protect me anymore."
"You've done enough."
The wind whispered through the trees.
Golden leaves drifted gently around them.
For a long time, neither of them moved.
Alex quietly spoke about all the years they had shared.
The dangerous arrests.
The impossible rescues.
The laughter.
The victories.
The second chance they had almost lost forever.
As the afternoon sun painted the forest in shades of gold, Rex looked at Alex one final time.
His tail gave a slow, gentle wag.
Then...
Peacefully...
Without pain...
The brave old German Shepherd closed his eyes.
Alex remained beside him until sunset.
Not as a police officer.
Not as a handler.
But as a best friend saying goodbye to family.
Several weeks later, a bronze statue was unveiled outside the National Police Academy.
It showed a German Shepherd standing proudly beside his handler.
Carved into the stone beneath them were the words:
"Loyalty is not measured by words, but by the lives we choose to protect."
Every graduating K9 officer touched the statue before beginning duty.
It became a tradition.
A promise.
That courage, devotion, and love would always matter more than fear.
Whenever new recruits asked who Rex was, the instructors smiled and answered the same way:
"He wasn't remembered because he was the strongest."
"He was remembered because, even when everyone believed his story had ended..."
"He found one last way to save them all."

And somewhere beyond the memories, beyond the badges and medals, beyond the years of faithful service...
A hero's final patrol never truly ended.
