Chapter 14 - Shadows from the Horizon

The hard-won peace didn't last forever. Two weeks after Mateo’s visit, a series of strange, unsettling incidents began plaguing Casa Carmen. First, our main delivery van was vandalized overnight—its tires slashed and a crude, threatening warning spray-painted across the driver's side door: “GET OUT OR BURN.”

Then, municipal building inspectors began showing up unannounced every morning, citing arbitrary, manufactured code violations that threatened to shut our operations down within forty-eight hours under the guise of public safety hazards.

When I went down to city hall to file a formal appeal, the clerk—a visibly nervous man with beads of sweat glistening on his forehead—refused to look me in the eye.

"It’s coming from higher up, kid," he whispered under his breath, sliding my paperwork back across the cold metal desk. "Alejandro’s former associates might be behind bars, but his political connections in the regional development board are still pulling the strings from the shadows. They want this alley cleared out to build a luxury commercial high-rise complex, and your community kitchen is standing right in their way."

The threat was palpable. The corporate vultures hadn't given up; they had simply regrouped, waiting for the initial public media storm surrounding our grand opening to quiet down before striking back through legal and logistical sabotage.

I called an emergency meeting with Mateo and Doña Clara in the back office. We poured over municipal zoning maps, property deeds, and federal protection clauses. While our historical preservation status protected the core building, the surrounding alley access and parking zones were vulnerable to municipal condemnation if we failed to meet their aggressive, impossible safety quotas within the week.

"They're trying to choke us out financially and legally," Mateo said, slamming his fist against the table. "They think we'll fold under the pressure of red tape."

"They don't know who they're dealing with," Doña Clara replied sharply, her eyes flashing with defiance. "Carmen fought them for decades. We aren't going to surrender now."
