Chapter 22 - Shadows from the Horizon

Success inevitably breeds new complications. As Casa Carmen broke ground on its second regional branch in downtown Guadalajara, local criminal cartels began taking notice of our rapid expansion, high public profile, and financial liquidity.

One afternoon, while reviewing construction manifests on-site, two unmarked motorcycles blocked the alley entrance. A heavy-set man with a cold, scarred face stepped off, dropping a heavy burlap sack filled with shattered glass and a chilling warning note onto our doorstep. They weren't corporate developers looking for real estate; they were cartel extortionists demanding a monthly "security tax" to let our construction continue unmolested.

My stomach tightened instantly, recalling the night Alejandro’s men had cornered me in that exact room years ago, but this time, fear gave way to a hardened, unshakeable resolve forged through years of fighting for what was right.
