Chapter 28 - The Next Generation

A decade had passed since that first afternoon I knocked on Carmen’s door. I was now thirty-one years old, running a statewide network of community centers that fed thousands of families daily, working alongside Sofia, Doña Clara, Mateo, and a dedicated team of passionate volunteers.

Standing outside the entrance of Casa Carmen one crisp autumn morning, I watched a group of university students unload boxes of fresh produce from a delivery van just like I used to do.

One young student—a nervous nineteen-year-old balancing a stack of heavy textbooks and looking entirely overwhelmed by life—stumbled slightly on the pavement. I walked over, caught the falling box before it hit the ground, and offered him a warm, reassuring smile, whispering the exact words Doña Clara had once told me: "Take a breath, kid. You're safe here."
