Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning

Brooke’s laughter cut through the smoke and gunfire like broken glass.
"Did you really think a standard federal prison could hold me, Dominic?" she screamed, stepping forward through the haze of smoke, her eyes wild with vindictive mania. "My family’s network reaches deeper than your little Newport police pockets ever could! The syndicate broke me out thirty-six hours ago, and we are going to burn this entire estate to ash with you and your pathetic family inside it!"
Dominic didn't flinch. He didn't run. He slowly straightened up from where he stood over Viktor, his gaze locking onto Brooke with terrifying intensity.
"You should have stayed in London, Brooke," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"Kill him!" Brooke shrieked, gesturing to the remaining syndicate survivors who rushed out from the armored van, weapons raised.
Before they could pull their triggers, the night sky above the driveway lit up once more—not with flares, but with the blinding searchlights of three heavy tactical helicopters bearing federal law enforcement insignia, descending rapidly from the clouds.
Simultaneously, the front doors of the main mansion swung wide open. Marcus marched out flanked by a full squad of federal counter-terrorism operatives, their rifles locked onto the syndicate remnants.
Brooke froze, her smile instantly evaporating. "No... no, that's impossible. I bribed the guards—"
"You bribed low-level guards who reported directly to my payroll security audit," a cool, authoritative voice echoed from the helicopter ladder as a senior federal prosecutor stepped onto the gravel alongside elite marshals.
Dominic walked slowly toward Brooke, the distance between them closing like a closing coffin.
"You thought you were playing chess with my family, Brooke," Dominic said, stopping just inches away from her. He reached out and effortlessly plucked the golden pistol from her paralyzed, trembling fingers, tossing it aside into the mud. "You were just a pawn I used to draw out the entire international cartel into one single jurisdiction."
Brooke’s breath hitched. Her legs buckled underneath her. "You... you used me? All this time... you knew?"
"From the moment you broke that coffee cup in the pantry," Dominic whispered, his eyes like jagged shards of black glass.
Federal marshals swarmed forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Brooke’s wrists as she screamed hysterically, thrashing against them as she was dragged toward the armored transport. Viktor and the remaining syndicate members were zip-tied and hauled away into custody alongside her, their global empire crashing down in a single, perfectly coordinated trap.
The chaos slowly subsided. The heavy smoke drifted away into the Atlantic breeze, replaced by the quiet, serene calm of the approaching dawn.
The front door of the east cottage creaked open. Nine-year-old Noah peeked out, rubbing his sleepy eyes, clutching his baseball mascot.
"Uncle Dom?" the boy called out softly. "Is everything okay?"
Dominic turned around, the terrifying aura of the underworld boss instantly melting away, replaced by the warm, protective smile of an uncle who had kept his promise.

He walked over to the porch, picking up Noah's baseball glove from the railing.
"Everything is fine, buddy," Dominic smiled, tossing the baseball gently into the air and catching it. "Go back to sleep. The house is safe, and nobody is ever taking this home away from us again."
