Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Horizon

Six months later, the Newport estate was thriving. The bitter winter had melted into a vibrant, blooming spring, painting the sprawling lawns in rich greens and vibrant floral arrangements. The dark chapter of Brooke Harrington’s betrayal felt like a distant, faded nightmare.

Dominic stood in his grand third-floor study, reviewing the final international asset transfers from the dismantled Vane syndicate. The expansion of the Mercer shipping terminals had cemented their dominance across the entire eastern seaboard. Natalie was back in her element, managing the local historical preservation society, and Noah was dominating his local Little League baseball team, frequently bragging about his uncle's pitching tips.

Marcus knocked twice on the heavy mahogany door before stepping inside, holding a thick, unmarked Manila envelope.

"Boss. Mail just arrived through the private diplomatic pouch. It bypassed the standard Newport sorting facility."

Dominic didn't look up immediately. "From where?"

"Zurich," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. "And it’s marked with a personal wax seal."

Dominic’s hands stopped moving over the keyboard. He slowly raised his head, his dark eyes narrowing. He gestured for Marcus to place the envelope on the desk.

Marcus laid it down carefully. Stamped into the crimson red wax on the back of the envelope was a distinct, unfamiliar crest: an interlocking crown and dagger—the hallmark of the Crescent Syndicate, a notoriously ruthless European shadow-cartel that made Julian Vane’s operation look like a corner store gang.

"Open it," Dominic commanded quietly.

Marcus sliced open the envelope with a combat blade and pulled out a single sheet of heavy, textured parchment written in precise, elegant calligraphy.

“Mr. Mercer, You carved up our regional subsidiary in London without permission. Julian Vane was a fool, but he was our fool. The debt for his assets, and your unwarranted expansion into our European shipping lanes, is substantial. We are coming to Newport to collect. See you at the equinox.”

There was no signature—only the crimson wax seal pressing into the bottom corner.

Dominic stared at the parchment for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a cold, dangerous smile spread across his face—the exact smile he had worn the day he walked into the servants' pantry and heard Brooke plotting against his family.

"They think they can step onto my land and take what’s mine?" Dominic whispered, standing up from his desk and sliding his custom Sig Sauer into his shoulder holster.

"What are your orders, Boss?" Marcus asked, his hand resting on his sidearm.

"Double the perimeter guards. Activate the offshore marine sensors," Dominic said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable authority. "And send a reply back to Zurich via encrypted courier."

"What message?" Marcus asked.

Dominic walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sunlit lawns where his nephew was playing catch with a baseball glove.

"Tell them," Dominic smiled coldly, "I'll be waiting on the front porch with the coffee ready."
