Chapter 6 - The Return to Newport

The private jet touched down back in Newport exactly one week after the chaotic dawn that started it all. The autumn air was crisp, carrying the salty scent of the Atlantic ocean and the changing leaves across the sprawling Mercer estate.

There were no wedding bells ringing. There was no grand, suffocating social ceremony filled with fake smiles, corrupt politicians, and superficial socialites. Instead, the estate was quiet, peaceful, and entirely reclaimed by those who truly loved it.

Dominic walked down the stone pathway toward the historic east cottage. The warm golden light spilled from the vintage windows, illuminating the interior where Natalie was laughing over a board game with nine-year-old Noah. The boy was no longer clutching his baseball mascot in fear; his shoulders were relaxed, his laughter echoing brightly through the high ceilings.

Emma stepped out onto the porch, holding a fresh tray of coffee and two porcelain cups. She didn't drop them this time. She handed one to Dominic with a faint, knowing smirk.

"I see the London trip was productive," Emma remarked, leaning against the wooden railing. "The financial news channels are calling the Vane Maritime hostile acquisition 'the corporate blitz of the decade'."

"It was necessary housekeeping," Dominic replied, taking a slow sip of the dark roast. "The estate needed a deep clean."

"And Brooke?" Emma asked quietly, her eyes scanning the horizon.

"Sentencing hearing is scheduled for next month. Her brother’s syndicate is completely dismantled. None of them will ever step foot near Newport again." Dominic turned his gaze toward the cottage door, watching his nephew smile. "The estate is safe, Emma. Permanently."

Emma nodded slowly, a genuine wave of relief washing over her face. "Good. Because Natalie was starting to worry you'd turn into a total recluse."

"I'm a Mercer," Dominic smiled faintly. "We don't hide. We protect what’s ours."

Just as Emma turned back toward the kitchen, Noah burst through the front door of the cottage, holding a newly painted wooden sign.

"Uncle Dom! Look! Mom and I finished repainting Grandma Catherine’s porch sign!" the boy shouted proudly, holding up the rustic wooden board that read: The Mercer Family Estate - Home.

Dominic walked over, knelt down on one knee, and helped Noah steady the sign against the porch pillar. "It looks perfect, buddy. Grandma Catherine would have loved it."

Noah beamed, running back inside to join his mother. Dominic stood up, looking out over the vast, secure, and peaceful grounds of his ancestral home. The storm had tested everything—loyalty, trust, and family bonds—but in the end, the roots had held firm.
