Chapter 12 - Shadows Beneath the Surface

Three weeks later, the calm over Newport felt almost too permanent. The federal trials of Brooke Harrington and the remaining syndicate members were proceeding behind closed doors, heavily redacted under national security protocols to protect the Mercer shipping lanes.
Yet, deep within the subterranean security bunker beneath the estate, a secondary terminal began to beep with a soft, persistent amber light.
Dominic stood alone in the dark chamber, illuminated only by the cold blue glow of multiple surveillance monitors. The system was tracking an encrypted, low-frequency ping originating not from Zurich, not from London, but from a defunct deep-sea cable terminal located just three miles off the Newport coast—a facility long abandoned by the Mercer family decades ago.
He tapped the keyboard, pulling up the schematic of the submerged bunker. A single text string flashed across the secondary monitor:
“The queen is taken, but the board is still ours. See you at the docks, Dominic.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened. The Crescent Syndicate and Brooke were just the public face of a much older, deeper web of corruption tied to the founding days of the Newport port authority. Someone else was pulling the strings from the shadows—someone who knew every hidden tunnel, every ancestral secret, and every structural vulnerability of the Mercer estate.

He didn't panic. He didn't call an emergency meeting. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile curved across his lips.
"You think you’re hidden in the dark," Dominic whispered to the empty room. "Let's see how long you survive when I turn the lights on."
