Chapter 15 - Sunrise on the Estate

The sun rose over Newport the next morning in a blaze of gold and amber light, casting long, peaceful rays across the sweeping lawns of the Mercer estate. The air was crisp, clean, and completely free of shadows.

Dominic walked up the gravel path toward the historic east cottage. The scent of fresh coffee and baking pancakes drifted from the open kitchen window. Through the glass, he could see Natalie laughing with Noah as the boy practiced his baseball swing with a plastic bat in the living room.

Emma stepped out onto the porch, holding two fresh cups of coffee, handing one to Dominic without a word.

"I heard the coast guard had an exciting night down at the terminals," Emma remarked, taking a slow sip.

"Just some final spring cleaning," Dominic replied, looking out over the secure grounds. "The estate is entirely clear. Permanently."

Emma smiled, leaning against the wooden railing. "Good. Because Natalie scheduled a family barbecue for this weekend, and if you're late, she'll probably ban you from grilling."

Dominic smiled—a genuine, warm expression that only his true family ever got to see. He took a sip of his coffee, feeling the profound, unshakable weight of peace settle over his shoulders. The storm had tested every boundary, but the foundation had held.

"Tell her," Dominic said quietly, stepping up to the cottage door, "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
