CHAPTER 1 – The Man No One Thought Mattered

The glass doors of Sterling Financial Headquarters slid open as employees hurried through the marble lobby, coffee cups in hand and eyes fixed on their phones.
Then everyone noticed him.
An elderly man, probably in his late seventies, stepped inside wearing a faded navy suit that had clearly seen better days. His leather shoes were polished, but cracked with age. Under one arm, he carried a worn brown folder held together by an old rubber band.
Whispers spread instantly.
"Is he lost?"
"Maybe he's looking for the social services office."
"He actually thinks they're hiring someone his age?"
At the reception desk, Emily barely looked up from her computer.
"Can I help you?" she asked impatiently.
The old man smiled politely.
"Yes, miss. I'm here for the executive interview scheduled at nine."
Emily frowned before laughing.
"I'm sorry... the executive interview?"
"Yes."
She clicked through the schedule for barely two seconds before shaking her head.
"There must be some mistake."
The old man calmly reached into his folder.
"I received an invitation."
Emily didn't even glance at the letter.
"Sir, executive candidates don't arrive carrying folders like that."
Several employees nearby laughed.
One man whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear,
"He probably printed it himself."
The old gentleman simply nodded, refusing to argue.
"I understand. Could you please call Mr. Harrison?"
Emily rolled her eyes.
"Our CEO doesn't meet random visitors."
Security had already begun walking toward the lobby.
People slowed down just to watch.
Some discreetly recorded the scene on their phones.
The old man never raised his voice.
Instead, he quietly thanked Emily for her time and sat in one of the waiting chairs.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Employees continued walking by, shaking their heads.
Nobody noticed the small silver pin hidden beneath the collar of his old jacket—a symbol that hadn't been worn inside this company for nearly thirty years.
And nobody realized that the building itself existed because of the man they were laughing at.
Just as security reached him...
Every elevator in the lobby suddenly opened at once.
The company's entire executive board stepped out.
And the CEO himself was leading them.
His eyes locked onto the old man.
Then something happened that no employee could believe.
The CEO immediately lowered his head.
"Sir..."
The entire lobby fell silent.
"...We've been waiting for you."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
May you like
Emily felt the blood drain from her face.
She had just humiliated the one man everyone else answered to.
