CHAPTER 8 – The Betrayer Was Never the One They Expected

No one spoke during the drive.
Arthur kept staring at the anonymous message on his phone.
"One of the people standing beside you has been betraying you from the very beginning."
His eyes moved from Ethan...
...to Olivia...
...then to Samuel.
For the first time since finding his children, doubt entered his heart.
The convoy arrived at an abandoned government archive where the FBI believed Project Phoenix had hidden its original records.
If the files still existed, they would expose every kidnapping, every forged identity, and every person involved over the past thirty years.
As the team entered the dark warehouse, the lights suddenly flickered.
Rows upon rows of metal filing cabinets stretched into the darkness.
FBI Director Mason whispered,
"We only have minutes."
"If Victoria's people get here first, everything will be destroyed."
Samuel immediately split off to search the lower floor.
Ethan and Olivia headed upstairs.
Arthur stayed with Director Mason inside the central records room.
Then...
Every light went out.
Complete darkness.
A loud explosion shook the building.
Emergency lights flashed red.
The exits slammed shut.
Someone had triggered the building's lockdown system.
Gunfire erupted from outside.
Masked mercenaries stormed through the broken windows.
Victoria Blackwell walked in behind them, dressed in an elegant black suit, smiling as if she had already won.
"I told you, Arthur..."
"...you were too late."
Her men began pouring gasoline over thousands of confidential files.
Arthur lunged toward them, but armed guards blocked his path.
Victoria calmly pulled out a lighter.
"Thirty years of evidence..."
"...gone in thirty seconds."
She flicked the lighter open.
Before she could drop it...
A gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
The lighter flew from her hand.
Everyone turned.
The shooter was...
Director Mason.
The FBI director aimed his weapon directly at Victoria.
"Federal agents!"
"Move in!"
Dozens of heavily armed agents crashed through every entrance.
Victoria's mercenaries were surrounded.
Arthur smiled with relief.
Then...
Another gunshot rang out.
Director Mason staggered backward.
Blood spread across his chest.
Arthur caught him before he hit the floor.
Mason smiled weakly.
"I'm sorry..."
Arthur shook his head desperately.
"Stay with me!"
Mason reached into his jacket and handed Arthur a small flash drive stained with blood.
"They'll never find..."
"...the real list."
"What list?" Arthur asked.
Mason coughed.
"The names..."
"...of every child they stole."
With his final breath, he whispered,
"And the name..."
"...of the person who secretly financed Project Phoenix."
His hand fell limp.
Arthur looked at the flash drive.
Victoria suddenly began laughing.
"You think you've won?"
Arthur glared at her.
She smiled.
"Open the file."
"You'll discover something your family will never survive."
Hours later...
Back inside FBI headquarters, Arthur inserted the flash drive into a secure computer.
One encrypted folder appeared.
FOUNDERS
Arthur clicked it.
Only one document was inside.
At the top was a photograph.
Arthur froze.
Ethan stared at the screen in horror.
Olivia covered her mouth.
Samuel dropped to his knees.
Because the face staring back at them wasn't William Whitmore...
It wasn't Victoria Blackwell...
And it wasn't anyone they had been hunting.
It was Arthur himself.
Under the photograph, a single line read:
"Project Phoenix — Original Founder: Arthur Whitmore."
Arthur whispered in disbelief,
"No..."
"I've never seen this before."
Then another message automatically appeared across the screen.
May you like
"If you're reading this... it means your memory was erased exactly as planned."
THE END... OR IS IT?
