CHAPTER 2 – The Founder They Tried to Throw Out

The marble lobby became so quiet that even the clicking of high heels stopped.

CEO Daniel Harrison hurried across the floor and extended both hands respectfully.

"Mr. Whitmore... I'm deeply sorry."

The elderly man smiled gently.

"No apology is necessary, Daniel."

But Daniel wasn't smiling.

He turned toward the stunned receptionist.

"Do you know who this gentleman is?"

Emily couldn't answer.

Security froze beside her.

The executives looked uncomfortable.

Daniel slowly faced the gathering crowd.

"This is Arthur Whitmore."

"The founder of Sterling Financial."

Gasps echoed across the lobby.

Employees looked from the old suit to the towering company logo behind the reception desk.

Impossible.

The billionaire founder had retired nearly twenty-five years earlier.

Very few of the younger staff had ever seen his face.

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"I... I didn't know..."

Arthur smiled kindly.

"I know."

"You judged what you saw."

Daniel escorted Arthur upstairs while whispers exploded throughout every department.

Within minutes, the entire company knew what had happened.

Some employees demanded Emily be fired immediately.

Others begged Arthur to forgive her.

But Arthur had remained strangely calm.

When everyone gathered inside the executive boardroom, Daniel expected Arthur to announce a major investment or retirement speech.

Instead...

Arthur placed the old brown folder onto the table.

Inside wasn't a résumé.

It was a handwritten list.

Every interaction he had experienced since walking through the front door.

Every smile.

Every insult.

Every employee who ignored him.

Every employee who offered kindness.

"This," Arthur said quietly, "was never a job interview."

"It was yours."

Confused faces filled the room.

Arthur continued.

"For six months, I've been visiting our branches across the country dressed exactly like this."

"I wanted to know whether my company still respected people... or only respected expensive suits."

Several executives looked down.

One senior manager began sweating.

Arthur opened another envelope.

"I've already decided who will lead Sterling Financial after Daniel retires."

Everyone leaned forward.

The room expected him to announce one of the vice presidents.

Instead...

Arthur smiled toward the conference room door.

"Would someone please invite the janitor inside?"

The door slowly opened.

Standing there was an elderly cleaning man who had quietly offered Arthur coffee earlier that morning when everyone else ignored him.

The room stared in disbelief.

Arthur smiled.

"The future leader of this company isn't determined by titles."

"It's determined by character."

And in that single moment...

May you like

The people wearing the most expensive suits realized they had already lost.
