Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Gambit

The courtroom was packed to the gills. Reporters, federal agents, rival mob bosses, and curious onlookers crammed into the oak-paneled room, all waiting to catch a glimpse of the fallen king of the Chicago underworld.
When Vincent Carter was led in through the side doors, he looked like a shadow of his former self. His hair was unkempt, his tailored suits replaced by an orange jumpsuit, his eyes hollow and haunted by the ghosts of his own hubris.
He scanned the courtroom frantically, searching the rows of benches for a familiar face, a shred of pity, a lifeline.

As the judge slammed his gavel down, beginning the reading of the federal indictment, Vincent finally understood the fatal error of his life.
