Chapter 14 - A Mother’s Vow

Two weeks later, the leaves had turned a brilliant amber, carpeting the courtyard of the Goethe Street townhouse.
I sat in the nursery, watching Julian sleep in his crib. His little fingers twitched softly as he dreamed. I leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against his soft forehead.
"Your father is gone, my sweet boy," I whispered softly, the morning light catching the diamond band on my finger. "And the people who tried to use us as pawns are nothing more than footnotes in a legal brief."
My mother walked into the room, holding a thick manila folder stamped with the federal seal.
"Madison, the final title deeds arrived from the city recorder's office," she said, her voice filled with a mixture of awe and lingering disbelief. "Every single waterfront warehouse, every commercial real estate trust, every offshore holding... it’s all transferred. You are officially the sole owner of the Chicago commercial syndicate."
I took the folder, tracing the gold-embossed lettering of my maiden name across the cover.
