Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"You're bluffing," Vincent snarled, though his voice lacked its usual venom. His chest heaved as he stared at the banking statements. "You wouldn't hand me over to the Outfit. Our names are tied together. If I go down, you go down with me."
"Not legally," Jonathan Vance chimed in, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Mrs. Carter filed for legal separation and asset compartmentalization six months before you married her, utilizing a retroactive prenuptial trust clause signed by your own late father. Every illegal asset you acquired during your marriage was routed through her corporate umbrella. Technically, she’s the sole legal owner of the syndicate’s operational licenses. You were just the muscle, Mr. Carter."
Vincent staggered back a step, colliding with the conference room doorframe. He looked at me—truly looked at me—for the first time since we met. He saw past the postpartum exhaustion, past the quiet demeanor, past the dutiful wife who used to pour his bourbon at night.
He saw the architect of his entire empire.
"Why?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "Madison... we have a son. How could you throw everything away over... over a mistake? I made a mistake with Vanessa. It meant nothing!"
"A mistake?" I stood up slowly, smoothing down the lapel of my tailored wool blazer. I walked around the table until I was standing inches away from him. I looked up into the eyes of the most feared man in Chicago, and I didn't feel a single trace of fear.
"You didn't just make a mistake, Vincent. While I was bleeding out on an operating table, fighting for my life to bring your son into the world, you were reminiscing about old college letters with a woman who abandoned you," I whispered coldly. "You told my mother to handle my emergency. So I did."
Before he could answer, the conference room doors swung open again.
Two men in crisp federal suits walked in, accompanied by Marcus Vance, the terrifying don of the Chicago Outfit, flanked by four armed enforcers.

Marcus didn't look at Vincent. He walked straight up to me, pulled off his leather glove, and extended his hand.
"Pleasure doing business with you, Mrs. Carter," Marcus said with a chilling smile. "The board has reviewed your forensic audit. Effective immediately, Mr. Vincent Carter is stripped of his title, his territory, and his protection."
