Chapter 12 - The Ghost of the North Side

Across town, inside a penthouse suite overlooking the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan, a celebration was underway.
Arthur Sterling poured two glasses of vintage Dom Pérignon, handing one to Vanessa Reed. She laughed, her emerald necklace catching the evening light as she toasted her new fiancé.
"We actually did it, Arthur," Vanessa smiled, swirling the champagne. "Vincent is locked away for the rest of his natural life, his assets are forfeit, and the entire North and South Side syndicates are consolidated under your flag. We own Chicago."
Arthur smiled back, though a strange, tight flicker crossed his eyes. "Yes, we do. Almost."
"What do you mean, almost?" Vanessa’s smile faltered slightly.
Before Arthur could answer, the heavy oak double doors of the penthouse burst open. Three men in plain dark suits stepped inside. They weren't Arthur’s men. They wore the distinct lapel pins of the Outfit’s internal enforcement division—the men who answered directly to Marcus Vance.
Arthur didn't reach for his gun. He slowly lowered his champagne glass to the marble table, his face draining of color.
"Arthur? What is this?" Vanessa stepped back, her voice trembling. "Who are these men?"
Marcus Vance walked out from the hallway shadows, adjusting his leather gloves with clinical precision. He looked at Vanessa the way a scientist looks at an interesting specimen under a microscope.
"It’s cute, really," Marcus said smoothly, walking toward them. "You two thought you played a masterstroke. You used Vincent’s arrogance, fed him false intelligence, and thought you’d inherit his half of the city while he took the fall."
"Marcus," Arthur swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice steady. "We have a territorial pact. The North Side respects the Outfit’s boundaries—"
"A pact?" Marcus laughed softly, a cold, humorless sound. "Arthur, my dear boy, you didn't execute a masterstroke. You executed a foreclosure that Madison Carter had already approved six weeks ago."
Vanessa’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the floor. "What... what are you talking about?"
May you like
"Did you really think Madison didn't know you were communicating with Arthur?" Marcus stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "She knew about your encrypted messaging apps before you even landed at O'Hare, Vanessa. She used you to trick Vincent into abandoning her during labor, knowing it would legally shatter his sanity and trigger the prenuptial abandonment clauses."
Marcus tilted his head, looking down at Vanessa with absolute disdain. "You weren't the mastermind, my dear. You were just a hired prop in a divorce proceeding."
